LD and vocaloid updates! And questions again

It hasn’t been that long since my last post, but eh. Why not =)

So, first order of business. I’ve sent the email off to tennenouji. They were very happy to hear from non-Japanese fans =) Thanks to all those who responded!!

Second…

I won third prize in a translation contest for HearJapan for a Vocaloid song translation! This is my first time winning anything (that isn’t math-related), so I’m really happy~

The song is The Trash-Heap Princess and Apostrophe by sasakure.UK. The details of the contest can be found here, and the results, as well as the other winners’ translations here. To be honest, HearJapan seems to be in a spot of trouble, so support them if you can!

To celebrate, I’m going to translate an album for Vocaloid. It’s been stuck in my head recently, ever since I found it. It’s a compilation of traditional Japanese styled songs from different artists. In addition, I’ve added videos to the Vocaloid song pages, so you can view/listen to the songs in the translation page. And then, I also added related AMV to the bottom of the translations … and of course, three of the songs (Alpaca, -ERROR, and Iroha Uta) have AMVs related to Lucky Dog 1. Be warned, though, that the -ERROR AMV spoils the entire Giulio route for you.

Please do check the songs out if you have the chance! One of my goals for the blog is to introduce people to new fandoms, too. (Granted, I’ve mostly focused on LD here … but still!)

(I have no skills in subbing, so I’ll leave that up to interested fans.)

Which brings me to my next topic … or rather, questions for you readers. Spoilers. Originally, I had refrained from working on any SS or posting any AMV outside the routes I’ve done so far (Ivan currently), but a friend has brought it to my attention that, ultimately, it’s you readers’ choices whether you want to be spoiled or not.

As you know, I’m also working on the Lucky Dog short stories (SS). However, they are very spoilerific and assumes you’ve played the entire game. My questions are below:

  • Do you want me to post spoilerific SS on the site and mark them off in big bold letters as a warning, or should I wait until I’ve finished the corresponding route (Ivan’s birthday SS, etc.) to post them?
  • Do you want me to do the SS all at once or would you rather me release it in chunks (say, 10 pages)? The SS range from 20 pages to upwards 200.
  • Do you want me to do the latest SS that’s released on tennenouji’s official site for the 3rd anniversary? I’ve finished the first section (because I liked it that much) and I’m not sure if you’re interested in reading. Yes, it has spoilers, but not big ones.
  • I suppose I should’ve asked this first. Are you even interested in reading the SS? (Saying “no” wont’ make the game come any faster ^^ They fill different niches of my time, so there’s no tiem conflict.)

I think that’s all for now. Please answer if you have the time!

Finally, UtaPrince Debut is out. It looks soooo pretty, but I can’t play it until I’ve finished AA. Sadness.

…Oh, and I’ve done more Lucky Dog. Maybe should’ve mentioned that first, ehehe…

(…Wow, sorry for the long post…)

Updates:

Playtest:

  • Pokemon Conquest – In Japanese, known as Pokemon+Nobunaga’s Ambition, and it’s just as it sounds – a crossover. Basically, it plays like Pokemon in SRPG format with some human mechanics thrown in. It’s fun, but I can’t decide if I should be happy it’s so Pokemon or sad that they didn’t reach further story-wise and character-wise…

Currently Playing:

  • UtaPrince Amazing Aria (PSP)
  • Pokemon Conquest (DS)
  • Lamento (PC)

Please post the SS as soon as you’ve finished translating them and yes I would like to read the SS released for the 3rd anniversary. I am very interested mainly because of the humor between Ivan and Gian can you just do the ones concerning them since it goes with the route. Like how you do the Gui x Gian when you’re doing the route?

        Thanks for responding so quickly!

So basically, you would prefer if I do that, say, Ivan SS first, regardless of if it’s first or second anniversary?

Also, you’d prefer to read the whole thing at once rather than in chunks, right?

The third anniversary story is three years after the end of LD, so there will be spoilers for all the routes (it’s also no specific pairing, so All x Gian?). Would you say yes even so?

(Sorry if I sound repetitive. Just clarifying ^^)

    1) Release the corresponding SS alongside the current route, so right now all the Ivan stuff XD Hold off on the others for now until you actually get there in the game translation.

    2) In one piece, please.

    3) In the future, do not mention that you’ve finished or are translating an SS that’s not corresponding to the current route. It’ll make me want to read them all at once. But since you now already said you have the first part of the 3rd anni SS done… I demand that you release it! >=D But in one go pls ^^

    4) Duh! ;P

Hello! I’ve read all your Lucky Dog translations that was released thus far and I really love how they’re structured and the lot. I’m not really a commenter because I somehow end up saying something stupid but this time I find I must have my say C:

I’m very much interested in SS because it shows the characters’ life outside of the game (and after) and it would be nice to read a SS when it’s completely finished instead of in parts — that way I won’t be like “What happens next?! WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!?!?!?! *claws at face*” XDD.

Also, personally I would like to read SSs outside of the current route even if it’s spoilers (though truly, if you look hard enough, you could prolly find small summaries of the other routes or finding the CG will more or less give it away). As well, if you only release SS of the current route, being Ivan, what about the other routes’ SSs? Will it be a long time before Giulio’s SS or say, Luchino’s (since Luchino will be the last route you’ll translate)? It’ll be like… A LOT of Ivan all at once and I really, really, really want to read about Giulio (because that route has my heart and Giulio is so adorable and, and *blubbers to self*) but also, it would be nice to read about the other captains too. That way, it’ll be like… sharing the love between all 5 C:

And I’m super happy with anything you translate so I obviously would like to read that 3rd anniversary SS C: (I’m happy with anything LD because oh my God, I’m so obsessed right now and if you had something that logs each person that checks out your site, you’ll see my name like at least 3 times a day.)

And uhh, as if this comment isn’t long enough, for your previous post about the question to tennenouji; I’m Canadian so I didn’t have anything really to say about American mafias and the lot and I wouldn’t have anything to relevant to say except for something like “i luv ld alot. it is da bes.” Errors and all because I’m too excite to write coherently.

But yes, thank you very much for your hard work and I await patiently for any scraps you could throw at me — u r da bes C:

Uwa, thanks so much for replying! Comments make me happy, so don’t be afraid and comment away! (Actually, your comment more or less made my day, so thank you! XD)

You do bring up a very good point … it will be a LONG time before I get to Luchino’s route (if Ivan’s route is any indication).

As for Giulio’s route… *cackles madly*

Anyways, thanks for reading the translations! I’m glad you luv LD =3

Don’t get me wrong, that would be way too theoretical for me, statistics and I haven’t really been on friendly terms since my first semester of psychology a couple of years back. But that honestly sounds exciting, from what I read up on it just now. I get my geek on with such things, I love it. *_* Now I now what I’ll read on the subway tomorrow °u° and yessssssssss re:internet :’D *brofists from halfway across the globe*

You, ma’am, are absolutely brilliant. As usual.
I would prefer you releasing the SS in chunks, rather than having to wait longer – but then again I’m madly impatient and don’t always know what’s best for me.
As for the latest SS, and any SS – OF COURSE I AM INTERESTED. I believe all your readers are. What kind of question is that even? 😀 I’m immensely grateful as always for the awesome service you’re providing – thank you a billion times over. c:

Aeh, you never know… Maybe some people don’t like … reading? …Wait, this is a visual novel translation. Never mind ><

I'll take your suggestion into consideration. Though I will say, if I do serialize, then I'll try not to end on cliffhangers. …Try. …OK, I'm going to make cliffhangers happen and torture you all. I'M SORRY FOR TELLING THE TRUTH XD (j/k)

By the way, you have a lot of silent readers in addition to the ones who comment. A good friend of mine, for example – doesn’t know a lick of Japanese, therefore can’t really play the novels and utterly relies on you. Checks your site religiously, too. I mean, I haven’t managed to inform her of a new update before she found out herself in months, and I check in daily. 8D Just so you know you’re appreciated more than.. …well, more than you know. xD *awkward english is awkward in the morning*

Mm, you’re right. I generally think only about the ppl who only respond since they have a voice, but I highly encourage anyone who wants to say something to comment. (To all you reading the comments, this means you!) Even if it’s just I fangirl too, since that makes for fun discussions and is encouragement of a sort. (omg all the people ranting about Giulio just makes me want to finish Ivan and get on to his route T-T)

Eh, I guess what I’m saying is … Thanks for always commenting! XD

Also, bring evil is fun. (It’s also a bit infeasible to do 200 pages at once, but that’s a secondary reason. =3 ) I think to appease both crowds, though, I’ll do a rather large chunk than just 10 pages, which is average LD-chapter fare.

Btw, did you know you’ve read more than 300 pages in LD by now?

Don’t get me started about Giulio, I’ve listened to that drama CD track where he destroys the kitchen trying to cook breakfast so many times now and I’m still making silly little girl noises all the way through C: In any case, stay on track with Ivan for now, you can do it!! It’s always so hard to come back to a project you’ve abandoned “just left there for five minutes”… look, I even drew IvanxGian for motivation, although there ain’t much to be seen *lol* 😀

Gian’s face is OK (is that his tongue…?) Ivan is a bit more buff/stocky than I’m used to, but not yours is probably more like what Ivan would look like if he weren’t drawn in Japanese anime-style XD

I’ve actually procrastinated a lot less recently, but mostly because if I do, I won’t have any time to work on this blog! XD

Naw, spam away. Rather, I feel like I’m spamming my own blog. XD The comments should be a place for others to talk, lol. Ah well. Anyways, all the comments give the place a feeling of community, since the blog is mostly quiet until I update it, which I can’t do much during the summer (not because of my job. Nooo, at least then I’d accept it as inevitable. No, it’s because the place I’m staying at for the summer has really crappy Internet, so I’ve resorted to replying to comments on the iPhone XD Don’t worry. Updates will still come on weekends when I get good Internet. \o/)

          Ahem. Anyways.

Internship … is completely left field, unless you’ve really scoured my blog ^^; It’s biostatistical genomics for a biopharmaceutical company. Lotsa programming and 200GB datasets. Also get to learn LinuX and stuff (even though I’m not so enthusiastic about that part). Other than that, I have a math modeling project that’s kinda part-time, which is for a university. It’s for a public health topic.

Here are my answers to your questions:

    1) Post spoilerific SS immediately?
Yes, please. I have no problem with any spoilers and for those who have… Let’s just say big fonts have been invented just for them.
1 1/2) Should SS be released according to route?
Personally, I perfer the SS to be released randomly, route-wise. Alternatively, you can split them: canon / route. (Or route / canon, it doesn’t matter to me.)
    2) Post the entirety of each SS all at once?
I’d prefer that. There’s enough teasing with the main game already. 😛
    3) Do the 3rd anniversary SS?
    A definite yes!
    4) Interested in SS, at all?
Hell yeah! Of course. They are at times funnier than the game itself.

Hey, I guess I’ll finally comment- I’m one of those silent commenters who stay with you all the way but too shy to say anything lol.
Really like what you’re doing for this game. I finally started Lamento, its so fun and awesome, and then I was appaled at how many people can’t play becuase it’s not in English. And I firmly believe that any game ran through Atlas/AGTH will lose some of its flavor if not properly translated. I really like how you’ve really brought out the mafia flavor of this time. My Japanese skills are good enough where I can tranlate, but a game like this would still be very hard for me just because of the way they talk lol (yakuza talk mashed with Italian that’s as far from standard Japanese as you can get!). It takes a lot to bring out their character in this way! I really admire your translation, and I play my copy of the game alongside it!

I’m highly considering helping out with the current Lamento translation. Currently, the projects stuck at about %15 with only a few translators working on Asato’s route, only . With the vocab out of the way, I realized that I can really understand the game well. My approach now is to get the vocabulary out of the way first (and for a game who’s script is 6000 in Microsoft Word pages, that’s a looottt, and it will likely take the entire summer alone) and after that I’ll open the game side by side while actually translating. The vocabulary part may not even take the entire summer, but I know when school starts I may not have enough time to translate (thus, I haven’t contacted the original translator yet).
I remember during a previous post during the LD1 posts that you said that there is iso software and companies involved when it comes to actually putting text in a game. Would you be able to elaborate? I ponder about using this kind of blogging format, though Lamento seems to be twice as long as Luck Dog(with all four routes put together!) Its possible, though. I just worry about time. I’m highly considering it, but as a junior in college, I wonder if I will really have enough time? You seem to be in college as well(or are you leaving, after internship). Next summer, I will most likely be doing an internship as well, I won’t have as much time as I have now (during the school year, after the seveth week, things get real hectic). But I’m determined!!
{sorry, i talk too much!} Love your site!

Thank you for reading and commenting! Comments are always wonderful =)

I’m glad I inspired you. I really like Lamento and it’s something I would love to work in, regardless of whether there’s already work done on it or not (like with LD. Someone had already been working on this game in a way when I’d started). However, I will say that out of the games I’m thinking of working on, Lamento is one of the ones I’m most wary about. Not because it’s really long (it’s written in storybook format, so I’m not surprised at the long script), but because it was created by a high profile team. I was actually warned by a friend when I started doing this blog in this format that’s it’s incredibly close to patching the game, and this was during the crackdown on visual novel wikis. I do love the game, though, so I’ll have very conflicting feelings if you do launch the project XD (I volunteer my help! <- preemptive attack)

Well, either way, Lamento will be incredibly hard to do in this format, given the style the game's presented in. I was planning it randomly on the side one day and was thinking about his XD

      You'll have to specify more what you mean by programs. Programs I do what with? This project is also ridiculously low tech, so it might not be anything special you're thinking about ^^;

As for my age, I just finished my first year in graduate school, so I'm a bit older than you're guessing. This project really does take a bit of time so you'll have to be ready to devote a lot??! =D

I hope this helps. I ended up ranting too! XD

And while Atlus has never stopped any of his translations, he openly comments on the fact that he is ‘allowed’ to translate and that the company could have stopped him if they wanted (esp. considering that those two games were remade recently for psp!) on pain of lawsuit. Also, a channel I used to follow on youtube which does {rough} transaltions for games got a warning of suspension from youtube for one of the new games she started for copyright infringement. I don’t want to be that person who gets shut down in the middle of hard work…
I should look into the Togainu chi patch and investigate- they are almost done with that game’s english patch. I wonder if they’ve had any responses from Nitro? Maybe since they haven’t been stopped or anything that is a good sign?

Yeah, I opened up the game and played though some of it, and I keep playing through that first Konoe and Asato scene-AWKWARD and cute lol. But yes, while looking at that scene, I realized that the game is so radically different in the way that the character’s poses change so often, and that every emotion is expressed while the camera pans. It creates a beautiful presentation, but ten minutes of the game would require maybe a hundred screenshots! Lamento would definitely require an actual game patch.

Oh, and by programs, really I don’t even know myself DX. I was asking about the program used to actually patch the games- I’ve heard something called an iso translator which lets you open up every single file in the game, so you can just erase the Japanese and type in the English. Or so it says. It seems a bit more complicated than this, though. Patchs have a tendency to cause bugs, glitches, or crashes in other parts of the game if not done correctly. Its been pretty hard trying to find information about it, but I’ll keep searching.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your advice- I don’t know, I kind of feel like being the BL Rebel. lol yeah, preemptive strike!! I refuse to play this game without translating it for myself anyway (I wont play my copy of Sweet Pool yet for this same reason, either) so I think I will always continue translating it anyway. But I really want other people to see it, too. I believe it will all boil down to my progress this summer- if I even get far or not. Devotion is a must since I know this summer will be my last with an open schedule. By the end of it, I will see if I will handle Lamento and how I will be able to use time properly during the semester if I do decide to translate it. And the process in making an actual patch. And I will keep Nitro in the back of my mind. Thanks alot!
[Gosh, this was longer than my first post, sorry!]

      Is Atlus a site with translations? I’ve never heard of them. Interesting that he’s “allowed” to translate (implying that they realized and just didn’t bother stopping him.) The fact that they didn’t get a warning yet, though, means there’s hope that N+C doesn’t care? But also that N+C knows about the whole translating deal. I highly doubt the companies would be happy about a patch, though, so I think that’s just N+C not realizing it’s there. The reason I’d gotten permission first was because my blog is more or less like playing the game, just without the patching ^^;

Two remade for PSP? I only know of Togainu no Chi (which was recently sold out). Which is the other one?

My plan would have been like a flowing, moving pictures. Something that’d basically be impossible to do in WP, lol. I like the idea, though. N+C always has wonderful presentation. Have you seen DmmD?

      I’ve never worked with patched games, either playing them (with one or two exceptions) or using them, so I wouldn’t know. My friend gets the script for me using a software, but I haven’t asked her what its name is. I personally just use the script, the game, and Photoshop ^^;

Good luck with learning Japanese! A good dictionary helps a lot, especially for kanji. Do you have good ones? I hope you make good progress — not only for learning and all that, but also because Lamento’s a great game and you should play more (omg I still have to finish Rai’s route) XD

Oops, sorry, Atlus is just a video game company, not another BL game company (wish they were, though, that would be awesome!) They just make regular mainstream games of different genres, like action and rpgs (does Persona or Shin Megami tensei ring a bell?) Haha sorry, I just used their example since their “Japan only games” were the first games where I first came into contact with translating and all that stuff. As for the remakes on the PSP, the originals were made back in the 90s (and never made it overseas). So the guy I mentioned translated two such games for PC/PSP, but do to recent popularity, Atlas remade the same games for the PSP recently (Persona series). But he translated them right before they realeased the remakes (and they knew and didn’t stop him!). Haha, this is probably the exception

Yeah, I played DMMD (briefly), and I was like, wow this is really nice! Makes me wonder what their games will look like even just five years down the road!
Okay, so you yourself actually haven’t actually used patch software, I see, that’s alright, so I shall keep searching!
Thanks, I’ve been learning Japanese since high school, although I completely stopped temporarily about a year ago. But going through the game, I realize that I still understand the sentence structure and its nuances, so I just need to pick out the vocabulary(kanji, verbs, etc.) I dont know and plug it into a dictionary! I can’t speak it at all, but most of my time I’ve devoted to learning kanji, so that helps, too. (I’ve forgotten some of them over the last year, though) I use an online dictionary and a kanji dictionary book, they’ve been great. Yeah, Lamento’s so cool that it would be torture to play through the game and not knowing wha’t going on (who is this/why are they fighting/ what’s that for/whos this guy with the white hair/ why is he so hot) lol

      Sorry, when you’d said “Atlus,” I thought you were talking about a video game patching group. Reading back on the original comment I’m not too sure why. I do this a bit ^^;

I know about Atlus the video game company. It would be rather embarrassing if I didn’t, considering I write for a video game journaling site. Altus is a company I rather respect for trying do hard to bring JRPGs over. I don’t always agree with their translations but at least they try.

And when you’d said PSP, I thought you were talking about N+C. Man, I guess we switched topics quite a bit in that convo. What happened there >_>
