Lucky Dog 1 pre-Contest

First off, for those of you who don’t know, I have a tumblr.

Second, some of you may already know, but I am hoping to run a contest on Lucky Dog 1.  I am hoping to do this by the time I finish up the first draft of the entire game.  (And again, I must emphasize, this is the first draft.)

The end game is that I hope to print this out in a hardcopy book and send it out to tennenouji to show our support.  (Now I just have to convince them to not be stingy with their mailing address…)

However, this won’t be a contest without some prizes, and this is where I need help.  I’m going to outline what I hope to do below, and if you have any thoughts / criticisms / suggestions, please leave a comment.

I have never had any experience running a contest, and since this is all mighty subjective, I hope to use a sort of crowd-judging system, where every contestant gets x number of votes after all the items are in.  After they’re all in, the contestants can view the items (probably in photobucket or something).  They can’t vote for their own work (which probably means I will have to do the tallying myself), and each person can only submit one entry.  The entries do not need to be entirely new (as in, they do not need to be started the moment the contest begins), but they can’t have been posted online already because I want to avoid people just picking their best work from two years ago or something.

Hmm, perhaps we should try for a theme?  Any ideas?  No?

Depending on the number of contestants, I hope to give at least the top 20 people prizes.  Since I know some people have gone and bought LD1 goods on their own, I hope to make it a sort of “first come first served” deal in that the top ranking contestants can choose from any of the prizes first.  This way I won’t have to worry about you getting duplicate items.

However since not all items are not made equal, I hope to assign points to the items so that, say, an artbook is worth 100 points while bookmarks are worth 20, and each person can get 100-points-worth of prizes.  Prizes will be shipped to contestants.  No need to pay for prizes … however, I do need you guys to pay for some of the shipping (sorry).

Does this sound like it would work?

Also, some questions below. I want to get a measure of the interest in this contest, too.  Please only vote if you’re reasonably sure you can do something, since I don’t want to over-buy.  But also, please spread the word because I hope this reaches LD1 fans who don’t read the blog, too.  (Say, Japanese fans…  The prizes include preorder goods so maybe some of those guys will be interested as well 😉 )

The question about the contest prizes refers only to the TOP prizes.  There are plenty of goods that I have already collected (such as folders, bookmarks, keychains, trading cards, postcards, etc.), but … well, these are the more expensive ones and I’m not going to buy them if too few people want one.

Here are pictures for the items in question:

Currently, I’m thinking 4-5 months for the contest running time.

Thank you for helping me out m(._.)m

I don’t know where I would be without all of you guys ❤

Wait wait hold the phone. You are thinking of doing a contest? Like the kind where we make some kind of fan work and people vote on their favorites? That sounds cool, I would love to see what fans come up with!

Yep, that’s what I’m hoping to do. I mean, I hope a lot of people participate so I can show tennenouji the overseas luuuurve XDDDD

…Or I just want to give LD goods away like Santa Claus. Either way, win-win for participants XD

      …CAN YOU PARTICIPATE???! XD

Haha, thanks for the questions! This is my first time, so your questions are a big help in making me think this through ><

The artwork needs to be scanned. Cosplay would be photographs, and any other thing you're making would have to be photographs as well. I'm not going to take the hard copies of your artwork, if not simply because I'd feel bad about it. (If you don't have a scanner, you can use a camera, but scanning would have better quality.)

…Given that it's LD, do expect there to be 18+, haha. OK, um… The trading/playing cards, postcards, folder, keychains, and other knickknacks, I believe, are SFW. The dakimakura … well, I linked pics of the pillows, so you can judge for yourself. The artbooks and 4th anniversary books are both 18+ and explicit.

The fanart does not have to be in color, but since I'm hoping to have crowd-judging, it would probably be in your favor if it is. Though, of course, not all good art is in color.

Digital or physical media (pen/pencil etc.) is up to you. I'm trying not to limit contestant preferences, which is why I'm also opening up the contest to cosplayers and such. Judging will be interesting, though…

The prize distribution … honestly depends on the number of participants. If there are perhaps 100 people over all categories, I believe everyone can get some kind of prize. I mean, it might not be a GREAT prize, but you'll at least get a card. But if you're just asking about the BEST prizes (the ones the poll is for), then that will probably be the top 5.

I hope this answers your questions.

Haha, you’re getting ahead of yourself! Haven’t set a start date yet, especially since I haven’t set the details of the context yet.

The due date will probably be 4 months after the start date.

I hope to start the contest after I am finished with the first draft of my translations.

Ouch, good question. I would actually rather put that in its own category rather than fanart… Can you put that into the poll as a Other response? For reference. I need to figure out what to do about the less common catgories, lol, because I want to avoid comparing apples and oranges as much as possible (but also avoiding giving an apple a prize simply because it’s the only apple XD)

Sorry for getting back to you sooooo late!!! I saw that there’s already the ‘Doujinshi’ choice so I voted again if that’s okay. I’m really excited about this contest! Really looking forward to it~! (o´ω`o)

Btw, does the contest have a specific theme or pairing or is it a free-themed one?

I considered the possibility of a theme / pairing, but ultimately decided against setting such guidelines. If I did it, I would want people to use it as a launching point, to help people overcome writer's / artist's block, but I think it would ultimately just end up stifling creativity for people. So no, the theme is just to have fun and put out the best you have 🙂

I guess that’s true~! Since it’s open-themed, there’ll be more ideas! I like the fact that there’s no pairing involved because there’s the bias issues, I guess. Though judging free-themed contests can get very tricky~! xD

Btw, have you decided on a criteria? It’s still early but just thought I’d ask. xD

Criteria? …Well, it’s a bit complicated to explain. I’m going to try to make the contest pages today, with the rules, so you can check it out there, but basically the quick answer is that there are no criteria. It’s less “judging” and more “voting,” this contest.

This is going to seem a bit weird, but could it be possible to enter and not get prizes? Its just that I really want to contribute but I live in a kind of remote area so getting over seas shipping would be difficult T_T. Also is there a main reason fanfic is listed as a last resort? I get that they can maybe be too long, have you considered some kind of word count to limit the length?

I can’t wait until the contest gets underway – Its going to be awesome!

Um, to put it bluntly, I will do shipping however … you ship things. I mean, I’d just ship it through international mail… If you can’t get mail or overseas shipping, I can’t help you, unfortunately. On the other hand, … what do you mean by “it is difficult”? Like, if it’s a matter of “can you ship things overseas”, then yes (but like I said, I won’t be footing all the shipping).

Fanfiction is listed as a last resort because tennenouji don’t know English (well). In other words, I’d have to translate it to Japanese if I do end up giving a copy of a book to them. And my English -> Japanese is pretty awful XD A word limit is a good idea, though, since it’d be harder for people to judge if the fics are too long, too.

Its more or less about damage for the shipping, things tend to get lost/bent/torn ect. so I’d rather enter just for fun

Google translate? lol that’d be disastrous!

No, I’d do the translation with what I know, but it’d be slow and painful for me. It’s really a last resort because of time constraints and my sanity.

Hmm. Well, it is possible for you to enter “just for fun” and not compete for any prizes. I can track items, but I can’t prevent them from getting lost. I guess ultimately it’s up to you if you want to risk it.

      …Haha, should’ve specified this.

Send images through email, which I won’t list right now (not the hotmail account). (Are there better ways of doing this?)
Please include your name (or nickname) and the entry and how you want me to contact you (twitter, tumblr, email, etc.) because I will need to keep in touch.
After the deadline, I will send everyone with a link to a page that has all the entries posted, and ppl will send me what they want to vote for, and I will tally. (What? There are better ways of doing this? …Don’t know them, lol)
After judging is complete, I will ask for shipping addresses (just so you don’t think I’m collecting them for some evil purpose or something) and which prize you want.
After estimating shipping, I will ask for some payment through Paypal, and then mail your prize off as securely as I can (ie, won’t bend or break in mail).

    Hello!
I wanted to ask, how should we pay the shipping, if we win? I mean, which way? Is a problem to not use a credit card (because I don’t have one, so)? Also, just for reference, we can send more than one draw/photo/ecc or it’s only one per head?

Btw, yayy!! I can’t wait to see all the things everyone’ll send ^^
I’ll partecipate for sure (even if I’m not that good at drawing, but still)! xD
I think this is a good chance to widen and consolidate the fandom, too ( *`ω´)

Hopefully I can do this! Maybe then I can get my butt in gear and do something this summer. Although I do have a question… I will most likely be doing a cosplay and have a good friend that’s a photographer. What should I tell him when it comes to photoshop? Is it safe to assume that I shouldn’t go too heavy on the editing?

Cosplay contests are usually judged by craftsmanship and/or presentation. Maybe you can ask voters to consider both when judging the submissions?

Oh and another idea- you were thinking of putting entries up on Photobucket. Perhaps entrants can also send in a short caption they’d like typed under the photo. A blurb like what inspired the idea or a bit of detail about what parts are handmade (for cosplay and crafts). That could also help with judging since some people can sew, while others are good with photo editing.
