Translations

thereeatthis

Here there be translations for anything that strikes my fancy.  For the moment, this includes song lyrics and visual novels.  Due to time constraints, I am not taking requests, though I may make exceptions.  If you have a song you really want me to take a stab at, I’ll go for it.

Please do not use these translations without permission.  I’m doing this for pure fun.  I’m also not looking to compete with other translators, as I’m doing this more because I love the writing style in the series and would like to translate it over as faithfully as possible.

Just … have fun, and enjoy!

Disclaimer:  I’ll put it here, just in case you don’t see it on the individual sites.  I own nothing except my translations (and this blog).  In the case of Lucky Dog 1, I have permission to use images so long as I comply with a few requirements (which don’t really affect anything).  If you wish to use these translations anywhere, please ask for permission first.  You can do so through email (from the “About” page) and through the comments on each site.

I would LOVE to see Majutsushi Orphen light novels get translated to English!! I’ve been searching those for years. So, for what it’s worth, count my vote for those. There’s a community of translators that is considering the project, maybe you can chip in and make it become a reality! http://www.baka-tsuki.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4352

Thank you so much for this 🙂

Hm, and here I thought I was the only one interested in the series =P

Orphen is an old interest of mine. That being said, I’ve actually never really looked into the series. All I have are vague memories of the anime (season 1 only) and a PS2 game I haven’t played yet. However, it struck me that no one’s even tried to touch the novels (not that I’ve seen), so I put it on the list as a consideration.

Thanks for your input =) It’ll be a while before I start working on anything but my current project, but when the time comes, I’ll take your comment into consideration ^^

Hey, thank you for replying (and for offering to translate in the first place)! 🙂

Orphen is a great anime, so I’m as baffled as you are as to why no one has ever attempted a translation before.

I hope you manage to get the time to do this. You have my eternal gratitude already, so there’s not much I can offer 😀 Nevertheless, if you need anything, just ask!

Actually, I am rather confused as to how the volumes in Orphen go. I know there are 20+ main volumes, and I’m assuming the several volumes that don’t follow the general naming scheme of the titles are the side volumes…?

Rather, I’m just confused what belongs in what, as the Japanese wiki was very unhelpful. Do you know where I can find a list? =3

Hurm. There are, as you say, over 20 volumes, and then a second series (the first one being “Majutsushi Orphen Haguretabi”) called “Majutsushi Orphen Mubouhen”. Maybe you’re mixing volumes from those two series? Also, it appears that this year a new series was launched: http://www.propelanime.com/recent-anime-news/orphen-fantasy-gets-new-light-novel-series-this-fall.html

I distinctly remember someone in the forum I pointed you to saying he/she had the raw scans of all the novels, and seeming quite knowledgeable about them, though now I can’t find the comment. Maybe that would be a good place to ask for help in regards volume order and such. I’d love to give you a hand there, but… regrettably, me no speakee japanesee XD (I’ll definitely start studying soon, though).

Hum, I’ll be on the lookout for those and drop you a couple lines here if I find them, then. In the meantime, I really need to drop English and start studying Japanese (more and more exciting and untranslated things seem to be popping up lately, and I’m already more than proficient enough in English anyway).

Thanks a lot once again for your time and, most of all, for being so damn cool! 🙂

Thanks for all your hard work in translating. I can’t thank you enough for the LD1 translations.
I know this is a long way off but I was wondering if you would do a walkthrough along with Gian Carlo’s LHL? I’ve been skimming Japanese walkthroughs and such but my atrocious gameplaying and translating skills are still making the game a bit of an impossibility for me.

Hello! Thanks for leaving a message =)

Yes, I intend to continue translating Orphen. However, that … prologue translation was honestly me getting distracted from my main project, which is why it’s up so early XD. I intend to start Orphen after my current game translation is complete … which may take a while.

Eh, maybe I’ll do chapter one when I’m not backed up in LD…

Yo! Still here, I hadn’t seen that you actually started translating Oprhen! That’ll teach me to subscribe to new posts and not just comments ^_^U

Right now I’m studying for some finals, so I have very little time, but I promise I’ll read the prologue you did as soon as I can. Keep up the good work! 🙂 And thanks a lot for this, BTW. I’m sure there’s other people besides me and kuroneko who appreciate this!

I didn’t know you also did games, though now that I think about it seems only logical 😛 I’m starting in ROM hacking/translating myself, and I actually got a project I intend to continue working on as soon as I have some free time (I intend to translate a PSX game, “Aconcagua”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aconcagua_%28video_game%29). Once I manage to dump the script (close), can I tempt you with translations credits in the patch? 😀

Once again, thanks a lot for your time and effort! Oh, BTW, just today my wife and me signed up for japanese classes, so maybe someday I’ll be able to do what you’re doing, too! 🙂

Haha, I did it in a fit of DO SOMETHING ELSE! but it was rather fun. Tell me what you think after you’re done reading ^^

I’d never heard of Aconcagua, but do you know how long the script might be? What do you mean by translations credits (translate the credits, or rather, translate and be added to the credits XD)? It does sound interesting, though, judging from the wiki article. I won’t be picking anything up while I’m doing LD, though. That one’s a full time project ><

Ooh~ I wish you best of luck! And have lots of fun! 8D

My question would be more, “would people like me to translate Durarara?” as I know other people are working on it, too. Either way, it is very low priority for me at the moment. I may do a prologue as a “taste test,” but otherwise I can’t see myself working on it long term any time soon. Sorry ><

SOMEONE ACTUALLY TRANSLATES ORPHEN? Bless you good soul, now let my run to the sunset in happiness *cries*
Burst of joy aside, thank you very much for translating Orphen. Regarding the novel existing out there, I recall there are 20 volumes for the first part of Haguretabi, 1 volume for the second part (also called Haguretabi too – it was compiled in Sawada Akita’ special bundle edition or something that was bundled with another series) and 6 volume (so far to my knowledge) for the third part of Haguretabi (the one with the 20 years++ timeskip). Then there’s the 13 volume of side-stories Mubouhen. The second part was published like at 2010? I think? and the third part began publishing at 2011 or 2012, if I wasn’t mistaken.

Aside from that, I’m really grateful that you even considering of translating Orphen – I had the books for years but my Japanese was abysmal, so I can only manage to scrape by the novels just a little ._. .

(And that you also are considering to translate Usotsuki Mii-kun and Kowareta Maa-chan..waaaaaaaaahh I’m so happy T-T)

To end this silly comment of mine, thank you again for translating!

      Thank you for commenting!

I admit your volume listings are very much confusing me… The easiest way would be to match up what matches with what on the Japanese wiki, but… Well, either way, I’ll keep my current book listing. If you can find specific Amazon sites or websites with the other series’ book titles (namely Haguretabi’s part two and three), please let me know.

I was rather surprised no one’s worked on Orphen yet, especially since it has anime and a game. In English, even!

Ah, sorry for the confusion. There was some mistake in my first comment, I think the correct one is this (after researching the Japanese sites): First part of Haguretabi = first 10 volume of Haguretabi (the part that got covered in anime/manga). Second part of Haguretabi (next 10 volume of Haguretabi), third part of Haguretabi is the one volume キエサルヒマの終端, the fourth part of Haguretabi that is still ongoing is 魔術士オーフェンはぐれ旅 新装版. Well, there’s this web that list the new series available, I don’t know if it will help : http://www.ssorphen.com/#book and http://www.tobooks.jp/books/book_046.html
This is the Amazon product listing if you want : http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4904376862/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=toenta-22&linkCode=as2&camp=247&creative=1211&creativeASIN=4904376862

To my understanding from the Wiki (if this somehow confused you even more, feel free to skip it ^^;), there are the first and second part of Haguretabi (20 volumes) and Mubouhen (13 volumes), these you already know.
The third part of Haguretabi is titled キエサルヒマの終端 , first published in 2009 bundled in Yoshinobu Akita BOX SET along with the two Orphen stories that have been out of print (titled 魔術士オーフェン・まわり道). Later キエサルヒマの終端 was published as a part of 魔術士オーフェンはぐれ旅 新装版 in 2011 as a separate volume. The fourth part of Haguretabi is the 20+ years timeskip, with the first book titled 約束の地で. For the fourth part, so far there are 6 books out now.

Well..the reasoning that I got from the communities is that because the anime is really old – plus it only covers the first part – basically the western communities only relies on the anime (and game and manga) as their source of interest. In Japanese communities however, their main source material is the novel (which had been dubbed to be really excellent in writing), which is why it is still going really strong. Which is sad, because Akita’s writing was said to reach its peak starting from the second part (at the very least from what I skimmed, the characters started to give more depth right from the second part.)

    Sorry for the super long comment – Orphen has been a very long interest of mine that I tend to get excited for this ^^;

Hm. For some reason, I thought that the fourth…the third… … all of the new SSO books were collections of the old stories? ie, two old novels => one of the new books. …I’ll check it out again. If this is true… …SIGH. More things to buy! XD

I’ll keep an eye out for the box set, too. Hopefully I can find a copy somewhere.

Ah. I was going to say… I’ve heard somewhere that SSO has great writing, but, no offense, from what I read of the first book, it was very average. It wasn’t BAD, but it was a bit amateurly straightforward. It’s great to hear he improves later (and he should!! Twenty books!! And I think he started at age 19 or something???).

Nono, it’s all good. At this rate, you’ll be my #1 source for SSO info! XD

I hope you enjoy(ed?) the prologue!

I have the third and fourth part of Haguretabi novel (if you’re interested in glancing on the scans before buying, I can point you to the links ^^) and I can confirm that they were brand new stories (it is a timeskip stories focusing on *SPOILER!* Orphen’s daughters, although Orphen is still one of the main character). It is true that two old novels were reprinted into a new book, but that one was bundled with the third part in Yoshinobu Akita Box Set (although the third part was later printed again as a separate part). As for the Box Set itself, from what I read that it was pretty limited, which is why the third part was later reprinted again as a part of SSO Shin Haguretabi.

The first ten volumes writing were a bit average, I agree. Although to my knowledge, there is a time gap of writing between volume 10 and 11 (between first part and second part) and most people comment it was in the second part that Akita’s writing started to improve. Well, I think we need to factor the fact that it was written in the 90’s too, so..^^ At the very least, one writing improvement that I found, for example, the way Cleao was written in the second part makes her to be IMMENSELY less annoying. Orphen too was becoming more 3-dimensional, so are other characters.

I hugely enjoy your prologue! Keeping track of your updates always 😀

Do you have titles for the novels in the third/fourth part?

Or rather, is the third part “まわり道” Mawarimichi and the fourth part “はぐれ旅 新シリーズ” Haguretabi New Series?

From what I can get, there is a “新装版” and a “新シリーズ”. The first is a reprint, and the second is the new part… Third or fourth…? @_@ (Sorry to keep asking the same thing over and over again ><)

…Cleo is definitely very annoying right now. So much so that I want to throw her out the window. I mean, it's funny comparing her to a character like Luke (from TotA) because there are similarities but he doesn't annoy me and she makes me want to kick her in the face. <)

          Volcan's not much better, lol.

Hello! Thank you for reading my translations, and I’m glad you’re enjoying them!

Admittedly, I’ve thought about this two games … for a grand total of two seconds. I like the games – I like the premise (even though I think some of the DID stuff could’ve been carried out better) and I like Katsuya enough. However, and this is hopefully not evident in my LD translations, I simply am not comfortable translating something so … explicit and PWP. LD has a story I love too, which is why I’m doing it. …I can’t say the same for KM ><.

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it ^^

I’ve noticed Death Connection before and I’d considered getting it, but I never got around to it and now it’s out of stock on Play-Asia. It’s probably lying around Amazon.jp somewhere, but I just haven’t gotten to it. I didn’t know it had Mafia in it though… Maybe that’ll influence my decision to play it sooner than later 😉

But as much as I’d like to, LD is really a long term project. I’ve played around with the idea of doing more than one game at the time, but LD is taking up most of my free time, and after that, I intend to do Altor (a Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn doujin game that’s pretty short but very pretty and good) which has been sitting around for like, 4 years, since I’d asked for and been granted permission, lol. Then it’s onto LHL and IFG. So I’ll be busy for a while, what with these and the LD short stories, as well as Orphen (whenever that happens).

…Long answer for short question! But anyways, thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy as you continue 🙂

I love your translation for lucky dog and I thank you for them. However might I suggest adding angel’s feather or kichiku megane onto that list?

Hello. Thanks for liking the translations!

As for your two suggested games, both I’ve played (albeit Angel’s Feather was long time ago). But both aren’t on the list for various reasons.

For KM I believe another group of translators are trying to work on it so there is little point in me doing it. For AF … well, the list I have on this page are games I REALLY really liked, to try to make the list as short as possible. If I put on every game I liked, well, I have enough work for myself until I’m eighty. So … yeah, I didn’t like AF that much. Sorry ._.

But thank you for considering them xD I can take the request as a compliment ^^

I’ve actually never played Shingakkou. I know it’s an amazing game, but I haven’t had the time.

As for Taishou Mebiusline, my favorite pairing overall is probably with (now let’s see if I can get the names right) Kyoushirou and Shigeru. I have favorite scenes with Rikudou and … Sephiroth and Shiki’s baby (sorry I really can’t remember his name ^^; ), but I really didn’t like Misaki much.

xD Your don’t like Misaki? Hahaha! I think I know why. You mean Hiragi Kyouichiro and Shigure. By Rikudou I think it’s actually Tatebayashi Kai and Sephiroth and Shiki’s baby (LOL HAHAHAHAHAHA WHY SHIKI WHY YOU CHEATED ON AKIRAAA xDD), it’s Senge Iori. Do you played the game without turning the sound on? Sorry if I kinda make fun of you here, I know that reading kanji is tough especially for guessing names. That’s why I only play BL games that came with voices so that I can know their names.

Seriously, I usually hate it when the BL games I played turned out to have true/canon route. You also can understand why, right? Except if the canon couple of the game turned out to be my favorite couple then it’s fine 😛

Aw man, my accuracy with the names was AWFUL. I remember now, it is Tatebayashi. I … associated his name with “shield” or “fortress” hence Rikudo……….. UGH.
OK. Tatebayashi Kai. And I remember Senge’s name now that you mention it. God knows I’ve heard it enough times, considering he’s the main antagonist in every route including his own.

Naw, it’s really a case of it being a long time since playing it, and the names being fairly uncommon in modern Japan. I always play with voices on, though I’ve gotten to the point where I can skim faster than they talk. I do like the twins too (Kaoru and Kaworu?), dysfunctional as they are.

Hmm, you mean like the Togainu no Chi scenario? A few games have that as their style. I don’t mind it personally, since you still do have a pairing with your favorite character, but I get what you mean. I do find it interesting in Tokyo Mebiusline that you could learn many different sides of the story, though. The only reason Misaki was the True Route, I think, was because you learned more.

I found Misaki pretty boring, tbh… ^^;;;; I mean, he was cool, but he wasn’t my type of character.

*snicker* What were some of your favorite endings?

LOL speaking of Togainu no Chi I was reminded that once I knew that Nano/Akiro was the canon couple instead of my fave Shiki/Akira (heck I became pissed up more with Shiki’s “happy” ending in the PC version!) but I was glad that they changed it to Shiki/Akira in the end 😉 I really want to play the mobile BL game made by Nitro+Chiral, which is False Alkanet because it seemed so interesting ;A; But does Lamento has a true couple like the rest of NC games?

Funny, the only thing that I liked about Misaki was because of the fact that he was voiced by Hanada Hikaru, one of the infamous VA in BL history. The reason is, well… I think you already know it…xD

My favourite endings, eh? I love Shigure’s happy ending and Senge’s all endings. Maybe my fave pairings are Senge/Kyou and Shigure/Kyou, cannot choose between both of them.

You know, I really love it when the main uke become the heart for all the semes instead of being toyed around by them. I mean, like the main uke played his role by bonding all the semes altogether into becoming a close family/team and/or freeing them from all of their problems. But sadly, this kind of uke is really rare since I only saw this trait in Aoba of dmmd, our beloved Gian baby and Michael from Shingakkou.

I think Yura loves gang-rape so much. Just look at Enzai, Absolute Obedience, Miracle No-ton and Lucky Dog 1 too (idk about Teikoku Seisenki and Laughter Land). I don’t mind though, I still love her 😀

I believe it’s actually Mizuchi, simply because it was his game released first and because (in the first installment, at least) he is the guy you start out being paired with … and you only reach the others if you’ve failed. (And, as a consequence, the others are bad endings, technically.) However, I also know that the game is split into 3 games, each with 1-3 of the guys as routes, so … maybe it actually IS Iroha in the Iroha game (which is game 2: Iroha and … Himeutsugi?). I haven’t gotten that far.

      Hopes this answers somewhat ^^;

      Less than I thought I would after I had started out way back when. I had started liking BL because of doujinshi from anime series, and the ones I had read had really great art and scenarios. The next thing I went into was Lucky Dog 1 and Togainu no Chi, and both had amazing characters and art and story. Because of this, I’d expected that from BL stuff, and when the majority of BL original anime/manga turned out to focus on smut (…Yeah, I was young at the time), I was pretty disappointed. ^^;

The only original series that comes off the top of my head is “Mainichi Seiten!”, which I first heard as a drama CD. I know it has novels and manga, too, though. I’ve also seen Gravitation and Junjou Romantica, but neither really interested me. I was always much more interested in series that were “gay in everything but name,” such as Weiss Kreuz, haha.

Weird question, but would you happen to know much about the Heart no Kuni no Alice series? I find it interesting, but there are so many books (and games I am unable to understand) that I have no idea where to start.

If you’re like me and have finals next week (or just in general need of it), good luck.

I want to ask your opinion. Recently I’ve finished reading Lucky Dog 1 Secret Diary F&L and I found that Ivan, Giulio, Bernardo and Luchino, all four of them are canonically in love with Gian at the same time in some of the general short stories (the one with no specific pairing or All/Gian). But what about Gian? Does he just love them as his comrades or more than that? From what I’ve seen Gian is oblivious about their feelings for him. Haha, that would be sad but funny too since all of them have one-sided feelings for him then. But feel free to correct me if I’m wrong!

Hmmm, I wonder if a BL game where there’s a harem ending exists. I would like to play that if it does.

Hello! Nope, you’re absolutely right. The “canon” routes of the holiday SS (Valentine’s day, White’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s, etc.) are all gen or one-sided AllxGian. This is mostly probably because any and all of Gian’s are possible canon (ie, there is no real canon, hence the earlier “”s) so to include all the possibilities, in those SS all the events happen but Gian gets with no one.

A Harem ending… I actually can’t think of any off the top of my head. In the rare occasion I’ve seen one where you have threesomes, but none where it was a healthy polyamory relationship. I think this is mostly because a visual novel is about making choices and getting a harem kind of sidesteps that, haha. (Personally, I prefer AllxGian ;P )

If the canon ending for LD1 is the one where Gian ends up with nobody, then is this means that the captains will hold unrequited feelings for him, like, forever? xDD Or Gian does loves them all romantically but decides to friend-zone them all?

I’ve finished Secret Diary F&L and I loved how each of the captains are obviously having romantic feelings for Gian and love him more than a boss (or anyone else) at the same time, yet Gian is completely clueless about it.

Hey Terra, does hiring star voice actors is expensive for a visual novel? I noticed that the newest ones (especially debut titles for newer companies) had either unknown or eroge-ccentric voice actors being hired.

Like Tennenouji publishing Miracle No-ton with unknown voice actors (except Suzuki Chihiro and Kentaro Ito), then much to my surprise the succeeding work which is Lucky Dog 1 has star voice actors compared to its predecessor. Your opinion of this?

I don’t know what tennenouji did to magic famous VAs on their side (Yusa Kouji, Miki Shinichirou, and Suzuki Tatsuhisa especially), but it’s unusual for a company that’s only made one game previously. Because yes, VAs are pretty dang expensive. It’s been a while since I thought about it, so I might have the figure wrong, but it’s somewhere around like, 1$US per word (what is actually defined as a word is questionable from the report I read, but I guess it’s pretty clear to the VAs and clients. MWord counts one word as one character), while it’s double or triple that for erotic scenes or something. For comparison, in one route I’ve managed to make you guys read (in English, of course, so it won’t translate directly) about 100 pages of text. A quick check of one page tells me there’s about 600 words/characters per page.

Edit: Sorry, 100 pages for Part 3 of the route. There’s more in Part 1 and 2 and the bad endings.

The rates for ero-games and other visual novels aren’t quite the same, especially because of the lack of H scenes, but I will say that I’m almost certain that the reason why series like Uta-Prince and Starry Sky haven’t made it over is because they’re games that use very famous voice actors (and have songs), and so they’re just … too expensive to bring over. The localization companies who have asked for these games can’t pay the royalties necessary for the overseas translation.
