Part 1: Prison
I call Giulio to the exercise grounds.
I’d asked some of my contacts to clear out the place, so we should be able to have a quiet chat there.
…This is my first time talking to him alone. Crap, I’m getting butterflies.
Giulio di Bondone. He’s 24, only one year younger than me.
The Bondones are big wheels among the Italian immigrants of Daivan and hold quite a bit of power.
Giulio’s grandfather has his fingers in a lot of businesses and is also a member of the CR:5 Board. I may or may not have caught a glimpse of him when I was skittering after Grampa Cavalli with his bags.
Even though he was born with a silver spoon, Giulio didn’t go straight. Apparently he took a nosedive and headed straight for the underworld.
Now, he’s the strongest fighter in the CR:5. A contract killer for assassinations and raids. I’d heard it was because of these achievements he’d climbed up to capo about two years ago.
People know him as “Giulio the Knife” … and I’ve also heard him being called “Mad Dog Giulio.” Please don’t bunch us together just because we’re both dogs.
Giulio: …Signor Gian?
I was absorbed in my thoughts, so his sudden appearance surprises me.
Giulio: Is something … the matter?
Gian: …Naw, it’s nothing.
Giulio: I am sorry to be late.
He’s so mild. Yet, this is the guy who’d minced up every single hitman sent by the Grave Diggers.
The Grave Digger is the biggest gang in the state. People usually call them the GD.
They’re an organization with a lot of power if you look at the state as a whole, but Daivan’s a port city centered around immigrants. They haven’t got a footing there, and the CR:5’ve always managed to drive the GD out of the city.
From what I hear, the ones who’d born the brunt of the actual fighting for the past five years or so were Giulio and his subordinates.
Out of all of us, his hands are the dirtiest…
Giulio: It is nice to see you, Signor Gian. You wished to speak with me?
…Something about him unsettles me. Just from the way he talks, it sounds like he knows me.
Gian: Have we … met somewhere before?
Giulio nods slowly. Several times.
Gian: I remember we passed by each other in the Boss’s mansion, but…
That’s probably not it.
Giulio: Um … on the street…
Giulio: We passed by each other once on the street.
Gian: …I see. Sorry, it’s completely gone from my memory. My bad.
Giulio: No, it is all right.
Gian: You don’t have to be so polite, you know.
Giulio: Does it bother you?
Gian: It’s not that it bothers me…
It’s not that it bothers me, but it feels weird.
Anyways, whether it bothers me or not isn’t the issue here, so I quickly moved on to the main topic.
Gian: For the escape, I want you to just do what I say. Anything can happen, after all.
Gian: …You’re not gonna complain? I mean, it’s like all big joke. We’re talking about me suddenly becoming a capo and then a boss if we successfully get out.
Giulio: I have no complaints. I will follow Signor Gian.
Giulio’s eyes don’t show a hint of a lie.
…Why is he being so obedient? It feels creepy when you don’t know why. Mrgh.
Gian: As for the details… All in all, I’m working through two plans. I still need to gather info before I can decide which one to go with.
Giulio: I see…
What the hell is up with him? It’s not that his responses are completely indifferent, but…
It feels like he’s paying more attention to me rather than to what I’m saying… Is it just me or is he staring at me really intensely?
Gian: So … if you hear anything about the guard schedule or anything else about this place, pass it on to me. Weapons would be nice, too.
Giulio: …I do not have anything.
Gian: You did just get here after all. They just did a room inspection on me too, so my entire stock’s gone…
Giulio: When I find an opening, I will search for something.
Giulio offers his services before I even get the chance to ask him.
Gian: Huh? Oh … counting on you then!
The people can’t keep the grounds cleared for long, so I cut our talk short.
With a light nod, Giulio leaves.
Giulio… It’s great that he’s cooperating and all, but is it just me or does something feel … off?
Now then … only one left.
