Chapter 3

Giulio Visit 1

After I ask some inmates I know to pass the word to Giulio to head on down to the grounds, I sit down on one of the benches.

Gian: Yaaawn … I guess I’ll just lay down a bit ‘fore he comes.

May as well take it easy for a bit.  I lay down flat on the bench.  Probably because I’ve been busy and haven’t taken any naps these past few days, the drowsiness is hitting me like a truck now.

     

Mm … and the sun’s nice and toasty.  That really hits the spot…

Gian: … …Mm … ngh…

There’s something soft against my mouth.  I push open my sleepy eyelids.

…Eh?

Gian: Wh— …Giulio?

Giulio’s unexpectedly long eyelashes flutter a few times.

Giulio: Oh.  …Good morning.

What’s with the handkerchief against my mouth?

At my question, Giulio moves the handkerchief around a bit, like he’s rubbing something.

Giulio: There … was saliva, so…

Gian: …O-Oh.  My bad…

Even after I finish saying this, Giulio doesn’t move.  His hands are still, his expression like he’s found a rare flower or something as he stares steadily at my face.

Gian: Mm, is it … all right if you move now?

Giulio: …My apologies.

He stuffs the handkerchief he’d used to wipe my slobber off into his pocket before taking a step back from the bench.

     

I keep my eyes on Giulio, who’s standing there like he’s waiting for me, as I slowly sit up.

…What a weird feeling…  It’s like … he’s worshipping me or something.

I’m just using the word “worship” as a joke here, but his gaze is weirdly steady.  I’m just at a loss.

Just what’s going on here…?  I peh out the dregs of the gum long gone tasteless that’d been hiding in my cheek.

For once, Giulio, with his unsettling stare, starts the conversation.

Giulio: How … is the plan progressing?

It’s then I remember.

Gian: I hear you’re gonna be hauled off to another joint?

Giulio: …So it seems.  That is what I have heard from Bernardo.  My lawyer has confirmed that it is a possibility.  However, he has also stated that it is still a rumor and that the time has not yet been decided.

Gian: If I remember right, you were tossed in here for murder, right?

Giulio: Yes.

Gian: Mind if I hear the details?

Like a child, Giulio gives an honest nod.

Giulio: I … accepted an assassination request from the family.  And I … killed the target as I usually do.  But, then the police appeared at the scene…

Man, he sure spits this out indifferently like it’s completely someone else’s problem.

Gian: That was a trap, wasn’t it.

Giulio: Perhaps…  Approximately two of my men were sent to another penitentiary.  My lawyer will take care of them.  I have … other offenses … so I was sent here instead.

I see…  Even if you don’t think too hard on it, he’s the one who’s got the heaviest charges among us.  Screw up, and he’ll be in for life sentence, forever and ever and ever.  No, if you count the other charges, then it might even end up being execution by gun…

Giulio: …But the security here is lax…

Gian: Eh, I mean, we can pretty much do whatever we want here through the day, but I wouldn’t say it’s ‘lax.’

Giulio: If I wished to, I could kill ten prisoners before the guards arrive, though.

…The hell is he saying?

Gian: Wh-What, there someone you wanna kill in here?

Giulio: Not especially…

I can’t tell if he’s calm or just naturally laidback or if it’s something else entirely…

We continue the on-off conversation about nothing in particular.

I cut it off at a random point.

As Giulio leaves with a small bow, maybe it’s my imagination but he looked a bit put-out.

…Now then, who to talk to next.
