Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 9 Best

Suspicions

ch-03

bg68

…I wake up to the morning sun.

c

…Rather, I think I’d fallen straight asleep without even remembering to shut the curtains last night… I look at the clock…

giandaivann3-3-2 Gian: Ack, it’s already ten…?

I crawl out of bed. Then I notice my completely bare body, so I wander around the room, searching for the few remaining clean underwear lying around and pull one on.

giandaivann1-2-2 Gian: I’ve gotta ask room service for this…

As I’m putting on my clothes, I realize I’m hungry.

bg00     bg106

…As usual, there’s no one here. All the captains except me have gone out to work, huh.

bg00     bg109

giandaivanu3-2-1b Gian: …Huh?

…Inside the room … there’s no sign of Bernardo. At the desk are two black suits, seemingly on phone shift…

Some soldiers in charge of the accounts are sitting in the small seat I’d taken up yesterday, peering into some kind of ledger with a grimace. The phones come calling, but…

…the Black Suits do nothing more than take down the info and caller’s name before immediately hanging up. …Judging from the atmosphere … it doesn’t feel like Bernardo’s just gone out for a quick run or a pick-me-up.

Just as I’m considering leaving even though I literally just opened the door, I see…

luchi109-6

Luchino: Hello there! It looks like you’re getting quite used to being the top dog in the chain of command.

bg109

For some reason, Luchino is there, lounging comfortably on the room’s sofa as he sips coffee.

giandaivanu2-2-1b Gian: My streak of unemployment’s still going strong here. …Bernardo’s not here?
luchidaivan4-2-1 Luchino: Yeah. I had some business with him, too, but … it appears as though we just missed each other.

I sit in the sofa across from Luchino before also pouring a cup full of coffee.

Luchino pushes a full milk pitcher and sugar pot towards me, but…

…for some reason, I feel like washing my tongue and throat down with the coffee’s heat and bitterness. With nothing to adulterate it. I notice Luchino’s eyebrow lifting as he watches me do this.

luchi109-3

Luchino: …Hey there, that’s no coolie tea. Even the Bronx trannies pour some sugar in first.

giandaivanu2-6-1 Gian: Naw, Bernardo drinks it this way, so I was just wondering how it tasted. …It’s not bad! Really freshens up the gullet.

luchi109-1

Luchino: By your leave, I’ll have to pass. …Ah right, Gian, you were … working with Bernardo, weren’t you?

bg109

Question marks pop into existence around my head as Luchino slips a hand into his jacket pocket and pulls out a long, thin notebook with something written inside.

luchi109-1

Luchino: When Bernardo returns, give this to him. He’ll understand when you hand it over.

giandaivanu3-2-2 Gian: …Whoa. Whoa! I think I see some freakishly huge money values on here. It doesn’t smell like something I can just blithely take in.

luchi109-2

Luchino: Look at you, you’ve already caught Bernardo’s love for details. It’s a claim. It’s the amount my crew will be using this week. I trust you’ll handle the payment.

giandaivanu2-2-2b Gian: Well, I’ll give it to him if that’s all you want, but … it’s not my fault if Bernardo’s not signing this thing.

bg109

‘Haha,’ Luchino chuckles as he brings his coffee up to his lips. …The bastard. He’s totally thinking the bill’ll breeze straight through if he gives it to me just because Bernardo’s got a soft spot for me!

giandaivanu2-1-1 Gian: Speaking of … where’d Bernardo go?
luchidaivan4-2-1 Luchino: I don’t know either. He left early in his car with just his men accompanying him. …It feels like he was going to meet someone difficult.
giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: What d’you mean?
luchidaivan4-7-1 Luchino: …It might be someone he can’t tell us about. Ivan’s been pretty high-strung. He’s still holding what happened back you-know-where against him.
giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: …What…?

…That’s right. When we were escaping from the jail, all of Bernardo’s plans’d been turned upside-down from the start, and because of that, we were almost goners.

…’Bernardo’s in cahoots with the enemy and turned on us.’

I feel like, ever since, this dark suspicion’s been lurking inside every captain’s gut.

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: …Then, I’ll keep that book for him… Keep your costs down and don’t try to bankrupt our family next time.
luchidaivan4-4-1 Luchino: That? That amount’s just a speck of lint in the CR:5 bank. Don’t worry, I’m sure to return three times the amount I borrowed. Bernardo knows that much.

…Don’t tell me … no, it’s definitely the case. Bernardo hasn’t talked about the trade with the franc bills between the Trump King and the Chicago Boss to anyone.

…Other than to me…

Luchino pulls out a – oh my, that looks really expensive – cigarette case from somewhere in his jacket, lights one of the smokes up with a lighter left behind on the table … and puffs out a cloud of smoke.

luchidaivan5-1-1 Luchino: Hey, Gian. Has anything seemed … strange with Bernardo?
giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: Where’d this come from, all of a sudden…? Not … really…? Hasn’t he been as usual? He’s just tired from the war and everything else and running himself ragged.
luchidaivan4-5-1 Luchino: …Really. If you notice something, talk to me.
giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: …What are you trying to say?

luchi109-3

Luchino: Keep an eye on Bernardo … so he doesn’t try to do anything funny, is what I mean. Even as it is, he’s under suspicion by many.

…I know he might not be saying this maliciously, but … the way Luchino’s putting it – no beating around the bush or holding back – somehow pisses me off…

giandaivanu2-11-2 Gian: You want me to play tattle-tale?

luchi109-1

Luchino: Can just letting friends head on down the wrong road truly be called friendship? I’m worried about Bernardo as well.

bg109

Luchino breathes out a bellow of smoke and crushes the shortened cigarette in the ash tray.

The awkward atmosphere in the room continues… Then,

ivan109-1

Ivan: …Huh? What, Bernardo that bastard’s still not back yet?!

…an annoying idiot comes tromping in….

bg109

He plunks himself down into the sofa, sitting beside Luchino.

ivandaivan3-1-2 Ivan: Shit! I’m outta fags! …Ugh, and this coffee’s fucking cold…! Hey, Gian! Bring a new hot pot here.
giandaivanu2-4-2 Gian: Wha?! Why’ve I gotta be the gofer, dipshit?! Rather … the fuck’d you come here for?

ivan109-2

Ivan: I came to complain to four-eyes! Shit! ‘Just do as I say,’ my ass! It’s all ‘cause of that I was completely screwed over today!

bg109

At the words Ivan spits out, Luchino’s and my eyes twitch and narrow.

luchidaivan4-2-1 Luchino: …Did you have some difficulties?

ivan109-2

Ivan: You try calling that fuck-up a ‘difficulty!’ Every last thing’s been leaked to those damn GD! What’s the meaning of this, shit, shit, shit!!

luchidaivan4-3-2 Luchino: …So, you too, huh…

bg109

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Huh…?! What … do you…?

luchi109-7

Luchino: …I received a report from my troops. When they’d tried attacking as planned, there wasn’t even a single rat lurking around the base.

Luchino: I thought it was just a coincidence, but…

bg109

The air in the room grows even heavier, and just when it starts getting unbearable … someone opens the door and airs the room out just a tad.

giulio109-1

Giulio: …Oh, Signor Gian… …Hm. So everyone was here.

bg109

It’s Giulio. As usual, he walks in with sliding footsteps that are nearly silent before saying,

giuliodaivan1-3-1 Giulio: The GD chain of command is different from yesterday’s. Yesterday, they were scattered and it was simple to destroy them base by base, but … today, their maneuvers have improved.

Giulio spreads out a map jotted full of marks for everyone to see … and then looks up.

giulio109-2

Giulio: …Where is Bernardo?

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: Uh, h-he’s… He headed out for some other meeting…

duo-giulioivan-109-1

Ivan: Mr. Top Captain went and left without a word on where he’s heading at a time like this, so he says.

bg109

…Damn it. Bernardo, hurry up and get back…

giuliodaivan4-2-2b Giulio: …This is … a problem… As the situation was yesterday, I should have already dealt with a large number of the GD who had entered the city. However…
luchidaivan1-4-1b Luchino: Did they come swaggering back into our turf?
giuliodaivan1-4-1 Giulio: That is … what is strange. They are maneuvering as a group … but before the situation can escalate into a conflict, the entire group flees and reappears in a different location…

From Giulio’s tone, it sounds like he’s troubled by something. …He’s probably also taken aback by the sudden change in the enemy’s movements.

That shows … just how much the GD’ve changed their strategy. And, how suddenly.

ivan109-3

Ivan: Daivan’s our base. They might’ve realized just how stupid it was to scrap over it…

duo-luchiivan-109-1

Luchino: A surprise attack? Or perhaps they’re trying to outsmart us…?

duo-luchiivan-109-2

Ivan: Shit, this is fucking annoying! If we’d just hit their home base and killed the lot of ‘em, then we wouldn’t be having this problem!

bg109

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: …The GD’s home base is another city, stupid. You try attacking them there, we’ll make enemies out of the cops and the legal officials there, too! There’s no way we could win.
giuliodaivan1-2-1 Giulio: …The only reason we are able to fight on equal grounds or above…
luchidaivan4-1-2b Luchino: …is only because Daivan is our home ground. But … if we keep this fight on the defensive, we might be the ones to get snuffed out first…

giulio109-3

Giulio: …It would be troublesome should that be the enemy’s aim.

bg109

Again, the atmosphere condenses and grows heavy. …Is there anything I can do … like bring everyone together like Bernardo does…?
…It’d be impossible for me…

luchidaivan4-3-2 Luchino: Of all times for Bernardo to be absent…
giuliodaivan1-3-1 Giulio: It is a problem. …Perhaps he … does not realize the enormity…

Aagh…!! I don’t care if it’s just Jesus passing by or some deus ex machina or whatever … could you please show some mercy on this poor soul here…?!

Or … perhaps…

…maybe you could bring Boss Alessandro back. Just have him pop through the front door with a, ‘Hey, everyone! Sorry for worrying y’all! I’m a-OK!’

…OK, so maybe he wouldn’t say that…

bg109     trio-luchigiulioivan-109-1

Knock knock.

Whoa?! Suddenly, the grinding sound of something resonates through the dense air. Me and everyone else simultaneously move our eyes towards the source.

cavalli6 Cavalli: What are you all doing, gathering here?

Luchino: Consigliere…!

When’d he…? Standing there is Counselor Cavalli with his guards.

Ivan: And the Gramps shows up, too! The hell is this, are we throwing a birthday party for the CR:5 or something?

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: …What’s wrong … Counselor?
cavalli6 Cavalli: I heard that that Bernardo will be temporarily unavailable due to a conference. I came to check on you since I figured you would all be running around like headless chickens in here.

Giulio: Conference…? …With whom?

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: Did the esteemed Mr. Hoover drop by Daivan or something?

bg109

Cavalli sighs and, with wavering sways of his cane, makes his way towards the sofas where we’re gathered … and, like he’s muttering to himself during a stroll outside, he says,

cavalli1 Cavalli: Let’s change location. We will be imposing on Bernardo’s men if we stay here.

With those words, the Counselor orders us to follow as he walks away and leaves the room.

bg00     bg106

The guards, the soldiers, everyone’d been cleared out. In a corner of the completely empty lounge, the CR:5 captains … excluding Bernardo … held a meeting.

cavalli6 Cavalli: At this moment … Bernardo is meeting with a GD executive. He is likely negotiating for an end to this conflict.
ivandaivan2-1-2b Ivan: Whaaa?!
giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Wha?! With … the GD…?!

The hell is this…?! Here I am desperately trying to cover for him, trying to deny the feeling in my gut … and he’s out there meeting with the GD…?!

giuliodaivan1-3-1 Giulio: …Consigliere … did you know of this?
cavalli2 Cavalli: I did. He discussed it with me this morning. It appears he was correct in not discussing this with you. To think you were all so shaken over such a trivial matter…

ivan106-1

Ivan: The fuck?! Who’re you calling ‘shaken’?! I’m not ‘fraid of no G—

bg0     ivan106-2

Ivan: Geh! Ow, fuck ow!! Damn it, the hell you doing, you—?!

bg106

Ivan’s voice runs wild when Counselor Cavalli’s cane strikes a firm whap! against his shin. He manages to hold in his insult on the old man at the last second, but just barely…

cavalli6 Cavalli: I have also received word from my crew that the GD’s movements have been suspicious. They must also be serious.
giuliodaivan5-1-1 Giulio: Are you referring … to how they changed their strategy? But … just what does it mean … for Bernardo to meet with the enemy…? I do not see the logic.

ivan106-3

Ivan: Well, I for one thought the bastard’s aaaalways been a fishy one. It’s just like back in the slammer, right? You trust what he says, and you’re a dead du—

Thump!

This time, I’m the one that kicks Ivan in the foot.

ivandaivan3-8-2b Ivan: Ack! Fuck, that hurts, you bastard…!
giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Then don’t make stupid accusations! If he sold us out … then we all would’ve been mincemeat a long time ago, don’t you think?
luchidaivan4-1-2b Luchino: …That’s correct. He knows everything about us, from our locations to our rackets to our homes, and even our hideouts…
giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: Then … Gramps, why … is Bernardo meeting with those GD bastards…? What’s he…?

I repeat the same question Giulio’d asked. Counselor Cavalli rests his head against his fingertips like a migraine’s starting to rear its ugly head…

cavalli6 Cavalli: He probably … thought that because we don’t often have the advantage…

luchi106-5

Luchino: He’s going to…?! He wants to strike a ceasefire with them?

cavalli6 Cavalli: Yes. Bernardo is meeting with one of the GD conservatives. They are discussing a compromise.

duo-luchiivan-106-1

Ivan: Why?! Why’ve we gotta have a treaty?! Just yesterday, we fucking beat those grave digging assholes to a pulp, and now he’s planning on throwing away our hard-earned victories?!

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Oh … I get it…

bg106

It’s what Luchino and the others were talking about just earlier… As things were yesterday, the CR:5’d dealt enormous damage to the GD.

But … that was just one day…

bg00     bg14

The GD have much more power than us. At this rate, if we drag the battle out in a war of attrition with no finale in sight … who knows which one of us’ll be the first to fall…

Plus, this is a battle on our home turf. It’s true it’s easier to protect because of that … but it’s just as true that if we drag the war out, there’ll be damage in the city and the citizens, which equals…

bg00

…damage to us through the respectables of the city.

giulio106-3

Giulio: Do you mean to say … that Bernardo’s thought is to form a treaty … before the enemy attempts a scorched-earth strategy on Daivan … and we find ourselves in an impasse?

cavalli6 Cavalli: Mm. And I supported his decision. While we still have the advantage – or, as Ivan mentioned, while we still have our victories … we will milk the conditions for as much advantage as possible.

duo-luchigiulio-106-1

Luchino: But … why did Bernardo keep the conference a secret from us? He must have known that it would be a problem later.

cavalli6 Cavalli: He is secretly making progress on the talk to keep the pro-war captains on their side from learning about this meeting. I cannot afford to have this information leak.

trio-luchigiulioivan-106-1

Ivan: …You mean we’ve got a chatterbox among us?

cavalli6 Cavalli: If I had thought that about you, do you think I would really be having this talk with you now? We still do not know where the informant is.
cavalli6 Cavalli: We could not have had this conversation with anyone but those present at the moment. But, there was no time to wait for you all to gather in one place. Understand Bernardo’s troubles, too.

bg106

…For the time being, I… Moreso than hearing about the traitors, hearing that at the very least Gramps is on Bernardo’s side … relieved me.

Thump!

ivandaivan3-1-2 Ivan: Shit…! Just when we were winning the fight…! Like this, how’s this different from licking the GD’s shoes, huh?! We’re just trying to wheedle what we want out of ‘em by throwing tantrums!
luchidaivan4-3-2 Luchino: …If the CR:5 were in perfect condition, we would’ve pushed back more. You understand, don’t you, Ivan? Right now … it is no different from not having a Boss.

As Luchino says this … his eyes glance at me apologetically. …I know what he means, and to be honest, it’s true…

luchidaivan3-2-2 Luchino: Sigh. Consigliere … about the compensation they asked for… What were the GD’s conditions?
cavalli6 Cavalli: They have stated that they will completely withdraw from Daivan. What they will take in return… That’s what Bernardo is feeling out at the moment.
cavalli6 Cavalli: We currently have no intention of giving one measly shanty to them. Even if we yield one street to them, that’s where the festering will start in Daivan.
luchidaivan5-1-1 Luchino: I agree. We mustn’t take one step back when it comes to protecting Daivan’s territory. Though to do so, who knows what we will lose…

ivan106-4

Ivan: …Bah, how fucking stupid! You know what they’re gonna do then? Those fucking GD’re gonna fuck Daivan up every time they want something!

ivan106-3

Ivan: Going by what you said, we’ve got no choice but to bend over backwards just to protect our land, huh? And in the meantime, they’re gonna rip off every last cent from us and then hang us out to dry. How ‘bout that?

duo-luchiivan-106-2

Luchino: Grr…

bg106

…He’s got an annoying way of putting it, but … the CR:5 is currently in danger of running into such a situation…

luchidaivan3-2-1b Luchino: …Counselor, has there been anything since … regarding Capo del Salto’s whereabouts?

Counselor Cavalli, upon hearing the Boss’s name, suddenly makes a face like he’s aged ten years and heaves a deep sigh as he shakes his head.

giuliodaivan1-3-1 Giulio: How long … do you think … we can keep the situation with the Boss … hidden…?
ivandaivan3-1-1 Ivan: My troops’re starting to talk. Whoa there, don’t look at me. It’s the same with your guys, too, right?

…This is bad. Can we not hide it anymore…?

cavalli9 Cavalli: In this situation, Giancarlo cannot undergo the Capo inauguration ritual… Should anyone one day realize that Alessandro was not at that ritual…

…Shit… …Before my eyes, in a corner of my mind…

transition68      bg00

…I see the red CR:5 envelope Bernardo had shown me that time in the prison grounds. It had appeared, was ripped to pieces, and scattered to the wind.

…At the time, I’d been so pumped up from hearing that I might succeed the Boss…

I want to go back in time to pinch myself up by the nose and sock myself one…

bg106

cavalli5 Cavalli: Understand? Be as cautious as possible. I will be leaving to talk to the mayor now.
luchidaivan4-2-1 Luchino: Be careful, Consigliere.

giulio106-2

Giulio: Um … may I … ask one more question?

cavalli5 Cavalli: What is it?

Giulio: The … GD man that Bernardo is meeting… Can we trust him?

cavalli3 Cavalli: …I haven’t a clue. But Bernardo says that he can negotiate with him. He says because they were old acquaintances…

transition196

giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: ‘Acquaintances?’ …He has a buddy in the GD…?
ivandaivan4-4-2b Ivan: Oh my, what’s this? Smooth one there!
cavalli6 Cavalli: I also know about the man. In the past, when we were in conflict with the GD, he had acted as representative for the GD Boss.

…Which means he’s no ordinary thug…

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: …That just makes things even fishier…
giuliodaivan5-1-1 Giulio: I agree. We cannot trust him.
cavalli5 Cavalli: I don’t trust him either. …And neither, I think, does Bernardo.

Cavalli picks up his ebony cane and turns his back to us before saying,

cavalli3 Cavalli: …I’m sorry you all must suffer this hardship. First you were all arrested, and now you’re left with exterminating the rats that have infested our family…
cavalli9 Cavalli: On top of that, Alessandro is missing… But, I pray that you will all overcome this. Show me a Daivan where…
cavalli4 Cavalli: …the CR:5 name isn’t nothing more than a name…! Please!
luchidaivan3-2-1b Luchino: Yes… We will prove to you – to the world – that the Boss’s decision in passing the baton to youths like us and making us captains was not mistaken.
ivandaivan4-1-2 Ivan: …Quit acting all cool. Either way, if the family gets blown high in the air, it’s the end of the line for us.
giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: But, you’re not gonna cut your losses before then, right?

ivan106-5

Ivan: Shaddap! …Well, who knows what that Bernardo’s thinking, though. Maybe he’s actually changing his colors to GD—

bg0     ivan106-4

Ivan: Fuck that hurts!! The hell’s up with you!? Quit whacking me like I’m some snot-nosed brat!!

cavalli4 Cavalli: It’s because you prattle about such childish things I’m smacking you. …It appears you all suspect Bernardo… Where was the first place you gathered to meet just now?

ivan106-2

Ivan: First…? …The phone room…

bg106

…Everyone’d gathered and waited in Bernardo’s room…

cavalli2 Cavalli: Exactly. Whether you trust him or complain about him, this means you are all counting on Bernardo, doesn’t it?
ivandaivan4-7-2 Ivan: Th-That’s not true…!
cavalli6 Cavalli: Quiet! Now then, I will take my leave. You should return to work as well. You’re young, so don’t waste your precious time.
cavalli4 Cavalli: Squandering time for fun … is a privilege reserved for old men like me, with few years ahead of us.

Leaving that pithy rebuke behind, Cavalli calls forward his guards and gallantly strides away.

…What a lively old gramps.

…No, I feel like the grandpa actually got a little younger just mustering up the energy to scold us out of our aimless loitering…

ivan106-4

Ivan: Aaah, damn! I’m heading back to my turf! Call my shop when Bernardo gets back.

bg106

Ivan chucks a box of paper matches at me. On it is etched the name and phone number of some speakeasy somewhere. Luchino and Giulio also stand up…

duo-luchigiulio106-2

Luchino: Now then. It’s gotten rather late. …Can we count on you, Gian?

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: Huh? Um … come again?

Luchino: Giulio and I must return to our positions now. When Bernardo returns, ask him what’s going on. I’ll contact you again tonight.

Giulio: I will … also keep periodic contact, Signor Gian.

giandaivanu2-6-2 Gian: S-Sure. Got it. Leave it to me. I’ve been getting vibes that phone duty’s my true calling anyways.

bg106

Luchino and Giulio both smile and leave.

giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: Now then…

I wonder when Bernardo’ll be back…?

Perhaps… An ink-black ominous feeling starts curdling in my stomach. If the ‘conference’ were a GD trap from the start…
