Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 9 Best

What Can Go Wrong, Will

Luchino.  Giulio.  And me.

We three are the sole souls in the lounge, sitting half-lifelessly on the sofas.

We, the CR:3, barely touch the Canadian whisky bottles and the glasses sitting on the table.  One of us gives a deep, deep, very fatigued sigh.

luchidaivan5-1-1 Luchino: It seems that Bernardo has run into some trouble.
giandaivanu1-2-2 Gian: …Because we’re dealing with Ivan here.
giuliodaivan1-2-1 Giulio: Not returning … may perhaps be Ivan’s form of resistance.

The meeting Bernardo’d been planning with everyone is now like this, all because Ivan wants to throw a tantrum and doesn’t want to come back from his outfit.

Luchino takes up a glass and, twirling it around without sampling a taste, says,

Luchino: About what I’d talked about earlier…

Luchino’s eyes glances towards Bernardo’s door.

Luchino: What do you two think?  Do you believe there is any problem in leaving the negotiations with Bernardo?

giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: For me … that’s about the only thing I can do.

Giulio: In the current situation, we have no choice but to trust Bernardo…  That is what I believe.

Luchino: I see.  Then … even if Ivan grumbles, by majority vote, Bernardo stays in his role.

At that … Bernardo, guardless, leaves his room and walks our way.

Bernardo: I managed to persuade Ivan.  I will still be in charge of the GD negotiations as is.

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: All right.  Was Ivan whining?

Bernardo: No, not so much.  Though, even now, he seems to be adverse to peace with the GD.

Well, even I’ve got no desire to shake hands with them, but … right now, surviving’s top priority.

If we draw the war out, the one to croak of blood loss first will, unfortunately, be the CR:5…

In the earlier meeting, this was what Bernardo’d reported:

In order to put an early end to the war with the GD, he will negotiate a ceasefire with a neutral executive on the GD side.

On the CR:5 side, we will protect our Daivan territory no matter what.  The GD side will receive some kind of financial compensation.  This is the one line that neither party will back down from.

The present situation, as of today, were that he’d met and spoke to face-to-face with the GD executive and had decided to continue negotiations and contact in the future.

…was what Bernardo’d explained to everyone.

luchidaivan4-5-1 Luchino: Can I ask a question, Bernardo?

Luchino says as he taps his finger.  Bernardo nods in reply.

Luchino: About the deal this time…  I can’t put it into words precisely, but … this isn’t like you, Bernardo.  It feels like you’re in a hurry.

Giulio: Why … are you hastening negotiations so much?

berndaivan1-1-1 Bernardo: That was what you wanted to ask about…?

Bernardo clasps his fingers and buries his face in them.  I … want to say something to him, but in the bottom of my gut I’m wondering the same thing as Luchino and Giulio.

Bernardo: There are several reasons I want to hurry negotiations.  First is the success of yesterday’s surprise attacks.  The GD are more shaken than we’d anticipated.

Bernardo: If we talk to them while they’re still suffering from our victories, we may be able to extract more advantageous conditions.

Bernardo: Second is…  The Boss’s absence has spread through the grapevine further than we thought.  If people start talking too much, it will cause the citizens to grow agitated as well.

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: If the crumbs catch wind of the Boss’s absence, then, worst case scenario, some fellas might even switch sides over to the GD…

Bernardo: And lastly … is also the most dangerous…

Everyone falls silent, our eyes steadily monitoring Bernardo’s face, his mouth.  Bernardo spits out a small curse…

Bernardo: …The Chicago Cosa Nostra have begun to move.  It appears that those damn gravediggers requested for help.  Should we be marked as enemies in the eyes of the Chicago Capo, it would be … troublesome.

giandaivanu3-2-2 Gian: Whaa?!  Chicago?!  They’ve got nothing to do—

Just as I get that far, I … remember the whole business with the French bills and Grampa Jew Beard … and the name ‘Chicago’ sends shivers down my spine.

luchidaivan3-1-2 Luchino: Vaffanculo.  If that happens, the Chicago gangs will not only devour Daivan but also the GD’s own city…!
giuliodaivan1-4-1 Giulio: They appear not to care for what means they use…

Bernardo: There is the risk that the underdogs who’ve been kicked out of Chicago will jump on the opportunity to rush into Daivan, all with the GD’s blessings.  …Unfortunately…

Bernardo: …even against these underdogs, the CR:5 alone has no hope of winning.  Additionally, if they form an alliance with the GD … we are done for.  That is why I wanted to finish discussions before this possibility becomes a reality.

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Don’t tell me … those stupid GD…  I didn’t think were so stupid as to try dragging in another gang…

Bernardo: There are some within the GD who see the danger in this.  It may very likely be a case of the farmer and the viper.  No, that will definitely come to pass, no question.

luchidaivan3-2-2 Luchino: Tsk.  And?  Do you think you can finalize the talks?
berndaivan1-1-1 Bernardo: I have no choice but to settle it.  If not, then it is the end for the CR:5 – for us.  The GD negotiator is thinking the same thing.
giuliodaivan1-3-1 Giulio: Is he … someone we can trust?
berndaivan2-2-1 Bernardo: …I have … no intention of trusting him.  However, current situation as it is, he is the only person from GD we can talk to.  We have to … go with him.

Judging from Bernardo’s tone, so unlike his usual – no, this is the first time I’ve ever seen him like this – it looked like it was hard for him to say that much.

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: We heard from Counselor Cavalli earlier.  He said that the guy you’re talking with … the GD negotiator … was someone you know…  Is that true, Bernardo?

At my words, everyone’s eyes move to Bernardo and pierce him.  …Silence.

…Silence.  I can’t hear anything but the sound of my own breathing.  Then…

Bernardo: His name is Dave Owen.  He’s an executive in the GD.  …Yes, he is my acquaintance whom I’ve known for nearly ten years…  A friend.

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Tsk…!

…Why … am I feeling so shocked…?  …Because Bernardo’s in cahoots with their exec?

Luchino: …I’ve heard that name before.  Executive … Owen…

I … shit!  What is this?!  Shit!!  My irritation surges forward for no reason whatsoever, drawing a sudden snarl from me.

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Wh-Why…?  Why’re you and him…?  He’s a fucking Yankee thug!  Just how…?!
berndaivan3-2-2 Bernardo: …There was a period when I was young, too.  There was a time when I screwed up in the past … and he was the one who saved me.  Ever since, it’s been, well, an inevitable acquaintanceship…
giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Heh … so he’s your pal.

…It’s a good thing Ivan’s not here.

Giulio: …Will you be able to … overcome your personal feelings and continue negotiations with the GD…?

Giulio cuts straight to the most difficult question.

Bernardo: I have a personal debt to Dave, but that is all.  It doesn’t change the fact that we are enemies.

Giulio listens to Bernardo without a twinge of change in his expression.

Luchino stands up.  He says,

Luchino: Bernardo … right now, we have no choice but to trust you.  …So, please don’t let us down.

Following after Luchino, Giulio leaves.  …After that, only Bernardo and I are left behind.

berndaivan4-2-2 Bernardo: …Have I disillusioned you?
giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: Gh…  No…!  It’s just…  You having a pal in the GD, and owing him something…
giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Just what went down in the past…?!
berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: …In the past, I … once had my life saved by Dave.  I owe him for that.  …That is all.
giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Your life…?!  What the hell happened?!

Just what could’ve happened to make a hoodlum save Bernardo’s life?!

berndaivan3-3-2 Bernardo: It’s in the past.  A lot of things happened.
giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: …Something you’ve gotta keep mum about?
berndaivan4-5-2 Bernardo: …I’m sorry.  Even if it’s you…

…Bernardo’s quiet tone…

Despite its intended effect, it stabs through me, piercing me somewhere inside.

Bernardo: I’ll be returning to my room now.  I need to give orders to my men in Manhattan.

giandaivanu1-11-2 Gian: …All right.

The words tumble from my mouth…

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: …So?  Still haven’t exchanged those francs yet?
berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: No, they’re still hibernating in the bank there.  …I’d hoped the rate would rise a little, but…
giandaivanu1-4-2 Gian: It just keeps dropping, huh.  Aren’t we gonna be in trouble soon?

Bernardo: Quite some trouble.  If I don’t exchange it tomorrow, we won’t be able to support the debt margin…

Already turned away, I can’t see Bernardo’s face as he says those weary words.

So wait. I’m confused. What part of America is this story taking place? Like where is the CR:5? I always thought it was at New York. :c

Keep in mind this is 1.) period fiction, and 2.) written by Japanese (and not Americans), both of which are even more reason for Daivan … not to be located in any state in particular. As in, LD1 was never mentioned to be situated in any particular state. All it’s stated is that Daivan is in the South, that it has seasons (or rather, isn’t perpetually hot), that it’s a port city, and that it takes hours to get to NYC or Chicago. As such, I think it’s most likely for it to be either Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina.

      As for the city itself, it gives off a sort of Pennsylvania / New Jersey vibe, though those aren’t in the south ^^;

Terra, I think……in the prologue, the original text says 「某州南部に位置するデイバン」. It meens Daivan is located in `south of some state’ and doesn’t meen south of USA.

…is that the only place (wherever you got it from) that mentions where Daivan is located? Is that from the opening prologue?

          げっ、 今チェックした。サヤさんのいう通り、「南部某州」じゃなくて「某州南部」にちがいない。なんとミスだ !(◎_◎;) これじゃやっぱり”southern state”じゃなくて”south of state”になる。

          気付いてくれて本当にありがとうございました! (>人<;)

To answer the original question with the new information, it’s most likely Daivan is in southern Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

And finally, fixed. Thank you so much for going back to check >< (It's not your fault!)
