Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 9 Best

Night Terrors

bg62

…There hadn’t been a smidgen of good news today.

Bernardo’s probably … been bustling about Daivan the whole day … and, he just came from a talk with a, no question about it, dangerous person…

…but, I can’t bring myself to say anything positive to him…

giandaivanu1-6-2 Gian: …Shit…  Hey, God, give us some kind of leg up, would ya…?

I whisper the world’s most pointless, most meaningless complaint.

bg69

For some reason, I … kind of want to just stare at myself and ask, “What’re you, a princess?”  Who’d have thought that I’d be taking a bath every day.  …Maybe it’s Bernardo’s influence…

giandaivann2-3-2 Gian: …Guess Bernardo’s still working…

The lonely words I utter to myself fall flat in the enormously wide room.  …Today’s been screwed up in so many ways.  …I’ll get a drink and wash it down.

I grab an expensive-looking bottle of whisky from the cabinet and set it on the table without even glancing at its label.  I find a glass … pour the booze in…

giandaivann1-9-2 Gian: …

But, I can’t muster up the energy to bring the glass to my mouth.

I can’t.  …My mind keeps flitting around it.  It’s not the time for alcohol right now.

giandaivann3-3-2 Gian: …I guess I’ve gotta.

…Speaking of, the phone room didn’t have a fridge, did it?  Maybe I’ll bring over some water.

I pull out a couple bottles of chilled water from the refrigerator.  While I’m at it, I roll up a blanket for napping.  I dress myself once again.

giandaivanu2-2-1b Gian: Huh?  He fall asleep…?

Bernardo’s work room.  I’d completely thought it’d be the Fortress That Never Sleeps, but instead … the lamps are turned off.  It’s a pitch-black room now.

Only the starlight filtering in through the windows shed some dim light on the inside of the room.  …Whoa!  If I’m not careful, I’ll trip on the wires.

giandaivanu3-2-2b Gian: Bernardo?

Maybe he’s taking a nap in the room?  Or maybe he’s in another room…

Then…

Bernardo: …!  Ngh… gh…!

…?!  Suddenly, the sound of a chair clattering in the darkness.  And … and … Bernardo…?!

Bernardo: …Uh, ah…!

giandaivanu2-5-2d Gian: …Bernardo?  Hey … Bernardo!

Bernardo: …Uah…!

giandaivanu3-9-2 Gian: Get a grip!  Hey, Bernardo…!

Bernardo’s slumped lax against the seat of his chair, his eyes squeezed tightly shut and his fingers clenched into claws…  His whole body’s stiff and convulsing.

…Is he having some kind of attack?!  I make a move towards Bernardo’s, who’s groaning through gritted jaws…

…Holy?!  He’s not breathing!!

giandaivanu3-4-1b Gian: Bernardo…!  Hey!  Hey there!!

I slap Bernardo’s cheek and, taking a hold of his head and shoulders, roughly shake him about.  But if it really is some kind of attack, I’ll need meds or a doc…

berndaivan2-6-2 Bernardo: …Egh, ah…!

Suddenly, out of nowhere, Bernardo’s eyes shoot open like a pair of cuckoo clock doors.  Even in the dark I can tell – they’re bloodshot and sightless.

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: …Bernardo?!

Those eyes take in the darkness … and then me…

bg00

berndaivan2-1-2b Bernardo: Ee—…ah, aah…!

bg133

His eyes see me … and reflect unadulterated fear.  …Bernardo…?!  …Rather, is this … really Bernardo…?!

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: …H-Hey…  What’s going on with you…?!
berndaivan3-1-2b Bernardo: A-Ah…  Unh…

It’s then….

Brrriiiing.  Brrriiiing.

giandaivanu3-11-1 Gian: Aah?!

Suddenly, one of the phones on the desk starts ringing.  …Wh-Which is it?!  I can’t tell in the dark.  But, at the sound…

berndaivan3-4-2 Bernardo: Haa…  Haa…!

Sparks zap through Bernardo’s eyes, and they switch on.  A familiar light returns to those empty eyeballs, filled only with terror and panic just earlier…

…But, the phone rings several times before cutting off.  Was it not that important a call…?

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Bernardo…?
berndaivan3-5-2 Bernardo: Haa, haa…  …Sorry…  Is it … you, Gian?
giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: You OK there?!  What the hell happened?

Bernardo buries his eyes, still behind glasses, into his open palms and curls in on himself.

berndaivan3-6-2 Bernardo: …Why … why is the power…?  Why are … the lights … off…?
giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: Huh…?  When I got here, they were already out!  You didn’t flip ‘em off yourself…?
berndaivan2-2-2b Bernardo: …There’s no way…

Bernardo lifts his face from his fingers…

berndaivan3-1-2b Bernardo: Damn it…  The fuse … shorted.  …Sorry…  Gian, can … you find it?  There’s a switchboard … near the door…

I give a half-baked response as I leave Bernardo.  …Why’s … Bernardo so frightened…?

The switchboard…  Ah, this.  I flip open the metal cabinet, clearly something not part of the original hotel, and peer in through the darkness.

…This feels kind of like back when I’d been lifting cars.

From inside the case wafts a peculiar, acrid odor.  I swap the fuse with a new one taped to the inside of the door…  The instant I finish…

bg64

…the room lights up, as though the darkness were all a bad dream.

berndaivan3-3-2 Bernardo: A-Ah…  Sorry … Gian…
giandaivanu2-5-2c Gian: You put in too many phones.  No wonder the power went out.
berndaivan3-7-2 Bernardo: …I’m sorry…  I let you see something strange.

Though the lights are on, Bernardo still has his face buried in his hands.  It’s like he’s enduring some kind of cruel pain or hardship…

Now that I think about it … when Bernardo’d slept in the main bedroom,

bg00     bg64

…he said he couldn’t sleep unless there was light.  …Don’t tell me … that’s how he goes … if there’s no lights?

Is he haunted by nightmares or something?

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: …This isn’t like you.  Something happen?  …It something from your past?
berndaivan3-3-2 Bernardo: …

Bernardo stares at me for a time, but … there’s no answer.  …It’s like when I asked about that Dave GD exec person.

He doesn’t respond, but he still moves his lips to speak.

berndaivan4-5-2b Bernardo: …I said, didn’t I…?  When it’s dark, there is no chance I won’t have unsavory dreams.  …I’m sorry…  I owe you.
giandaivanu2-7-2 Gian: …Why don’t you lie down in the room over?

bern64-5

Bernardo: No … I have to wait for a call.  Sorry…

I don’t ask any other questions, instead bringing in the blanket and water bottles and setting them down in front of Bernardo.

giandaivanu2-7-2 Gian: It’s better if you get some shut-eye.  I’m sure tomorrow’s gonna be crazy busy, too.
berndaivan4-5-2b Bernardo: You’re right…

And, with that, a silence settles between us.  The phone doesn’t ring either.  …What should I say to Bernardo?  …That I’ll keep him company, sleep next to him?

bg00     bg65

I return to the main room…

giandaivanu1-6-2 Gian: …Damn it…!

Still standing, I grab the abandoned glass of booze, and I let gravity do the job of dragging the alcohol down my throat and through my gut for me.  …The sweetness of whisky spreads into my nose.

Rather than drinking, it’s more like I’m dumping the liquid into my body…

That night, I crashed with the lights still on.

Thank you again for translating this!
    Now that we know about the nightmares, the scene back at the shed during the escape part makes so much more sense now! I mean, it was probably really dark there, too, and Bernardo must’ve been so scared of the others finding out about his nightmares, that’s why he curled up to Gian… ;__;
Though still the question remains why he treats Gian so differently from all the others…
AHHH, Bernardo’s route is my fav so far ><
