Chapter 10 Best

Spiral Down

bg00     bg68

That morning…

First thing I notice when I wake up is the clock striking ten in the morning.  Next comes the undigested alcohol clinging to the walls of my skull and gut.  I think I drank too much on an empty stomach…

In the lounge, I get some of the guards on break to split some coffee with me and, for a time, let the minutes tick by idly.  …Maybe I’ll head back to bed for some more shuteye…

Just when I think that.

Ding ling.

The elevator slides open and a swarm of men flood out.

Luchino: Hey!  Don’t push yourself!  If you need to tell him something, I’ll pass the message on!

Giulio: No, I am … fine…  My feet were not injured.  I … must…

It’s Giulio and Luchino.  Surrounding them are soldiers, all looking raring for a taste of blood…

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: What’s wrong, Giulio—  …Holy?!  You’re hurt!

Giulio: Signor Gian…  My apologies … I have erred…

Giulio’s shirt is stained black around his torso.  …It’s blood…  and there’s quite a bit…

giandaivanu3-4-1 Gian: What the hell happened?!  Forget that.  You need a doctor!

Luchino: They fucking ambushed him…!  How else do you think they could fucking touch him?!

Giulio: A bomb had been wired to explode.  They probably … knew my destination beforehand.

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Don’t tell me…!

Luchino: …This is bad.  The soldiers are in an uproar – ‘We’re just sitting and waiting for the rats to whack us.’

A murmur rises up from the soldiers around them.

Probably drawn out by all the commotion…

Bernardo: What’s wrong?  Did something happen?  …?!  Giulio, what happened to you?!

…Bernardo comes out of his room.  He immediately notices Giulio’s condition and his expression pulls tight.

Giulio: The enemy … knew I was coming…  Bernardo…

Giulio quietly utters the words like a machine.

Giulio: The negotiations with the GD are proceeding, correct?  Why … are they attacking?

Bernardo: …I’m sorry.  Their negotiator, Dave, doesn’t have full power either.  He may not be able to stop the extremists…

At Bernardo’s voice, Luchino interrupts with a hand.

Luchino: Hold it!  Giulio was almost hit just now!!  They know our movements through and through!

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Wh—  …You mean Bernardo…?  No way in hell!

Giulio: It would be best … to halt the dispatching of troops into the city … for the time being.  We would only … be sending them to their deaths.

berndaivanc4-1-2 Bernardo: I understand.  I will reaffirm what we talked about yesterday with him immediately.

Luchino: We can trust you on that … right?

berndaivanc3-2-2 Bernardo: …I am not Capo.  I can … only ask for everyone’s trust.  But … please, believe in me.  I’ll…

Bernardo’s eyes stare down at his fingernails.  …He’s been acting strange since yesterday…  …Why’s he gone so shifty…?

…Crap, this is some really crappy atmosphere…

Just a few days ago, I never would’ve imagined that Bernardo could be harried to this extent.  …At this rate, the CR:5’ll collapse…

Suddenly, the thought, ‘Let’s split it, then,’ flashes across my mind … but it quickly disappears.  …There’s no way I can do it.

After everything, I’m just going to see life off as a street thug in some other city?  Fuck no!  Right now, what I can do is…

transition10     bg106

As the next Boss in line, I’ve gotta stand firm…!

giandaivanu1-9-2b Gian: Oh, I get it.  So that’s how it is.  I guess that is pretty bad, huh.
luchidaivan4-8-2 Luchino: What are you talking about?
berndaivanc2-1-2 Bernardo: …Gian…?
giandaivanu3-13-1b Gian: Look at us going at each other like dogs.  This isn’t even the CR:5.  We’re just being a pack of mutts.  …Isn’t this exactly what the rat … our enemy … is aiming for?

Luchino: …Wh—

Giulio: Signor Gian…

giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: Am I wrong, Bernardo?

Bernardo: O-Oh…  Yeah.  You’re right.  It may be one of their objectives … and it is succeeding.

Luchino: Then what do you say we do?!

giandaivanu3-15-2 Gian: Breathe in, breathe out.  And why don’t you get your balls massaged while you’re at it?

Luchino: Wha—

Giulio: You mean, relax … and calm down…?

giandaivanu2-6-2 Gian: Bingo in one.  …Not to mention, our troops have their eyes on us.

Luchino falters…  This time it’s him that awkwardly drops his eyes to his feet.

luchidaivan4-1-2b Luchino: Sorry…  When I saw Giulio’s blood, the blood went to my head as well.

…For a while, everyone falls silent.

giandaivanu2-2-1 Gian: Um, right!  Frankly speaking, I really haven’t got what it takes to be boss yet.
berndaivanc2-1-2 Bernardo: Gian…
giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: That’s why if we don’t screw our heads back on straight, we’re out!  ‘cause we haven’t got the Boss to straighten things out for us…  Let’s keep our heads chilled.  Cool as a cucumber.

I feel like there’s a something, like a barely-visible string of something, stretching taut between everyone here.

“It’s Giulio and Luchino. Surrounding them are soldiers, all looking raring for a taste of blood…”
Uh, sorry but was does “looking raring” mean? I have no idea what that is o_o

“Raring for,” if I used it right, means “biting at the bit” or “eager for.” The “looking raring for” isn’t exactly the best grammar, but hey, it’s Gian talking. 😛

Sorry for the late response. Thanks for reading!

“Giulio: Signor Gian… My apologies … I have erred…” <- shouldn't this be "I have errored" or something like that…? I dunno if "errored" is even a proper grammar term but nothin else comes to mind.

“To err” is to have made a mistake. There is a better way to phrase that, too, but it’s fled my mind now. I’ll probably correct it in a second run, but what I have currently is correct grammatically. Thanks for reading closely 🙂
