Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 10 Best

I admit defeat first and avert my eyes.  It’s then mine catch the stage just as the performance is ending.  Then suddenly…

I see a figure in a whitish dress.

Oh, the resident singer, huh.  …She’s a little past her prime … but she sure is hot…

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: Hey, Bernardo!  Over there.
berndaivan2-2-2 Bernardo: …A-Ah?  Yeah.  Mm.

…?  Bernardo’s expression suddenly shutters.  What…?  Does he know her?

Nastasha: …Oh…

The dame onstage looks our way, too.  I think I see her lips move before she starts singing…

Her eyes on Bernardo the entire time…

I lick my glass…  I ask Bernardo, who’s looking away from both the lady and me off towards some other point,

giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: …Do you know the lady?
berndaivan4-7-2 Bernardo: Y-Yeah.  Kind … of…
giandaivanu2-5-2b Gian: Really?  Well, looking the way you do, I guess I’m not surprised.

Bernardo: Y-Yeah.  You’re right.

…Bernardo’s clearly in a tizzy.  Why?  …She’s smoking hot.  Normally this is where you’d be puffing your chest, smug as a cat.

…And, jeez, why am I getting annoyed at this…?

Silence fills the space between us.  In contrast, the lounge star strikes up a quiet tune.

Nastasha: I wonder … do you remember when that was, again?

Her voice was a trickle of water slowly seeping over parched concrete.  The band then converges with the voice and the song starts.

…It’s a good song.  …And it’s in Italian.  It really sinks in.  And…

berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: …Mm.  Cough…

He lights the smoke and chokes on it.  …He’s clearly shaken by the lady’s earlier words.  Even I can tell this.

…It looks like the diva and Bernardo aren’t strangers.

giandaivanu2-2-1b Gian: It’s a good song.
berndaivan4-2-2 Bernardo: Y-Yeah.  You’re … you’re right.
giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: Hey.
berndaivan4-1-2 Bernardo: Wh-What … is it?
giandaivanu2-1-1 Gian: Hand me a smoke.

Bernardo gingerly hands me the box of cigarettes.  …He’s out of it.  He forgot the lighter.

I place a fresh cigarette into my mouth, get up…

Bernardo: …!  H-Hey…!

I help myself to the fire straight from the fag in Bernardo’s mouth.

Usually this wouldn’t surprise Bernardo at all.  Hell, he’s even given me one he’s already used.  …Is he losing his cool because there’s a lady present?

Bernardo’s Subordinate A: …Pardon me.  You have a call…

Oh, I know this soldier!  He came along, too!  The familiar man whispers into Bernardo’s ear.  Shouldn’t be surprised, but I guess this shop’s a part of the contact network, too, huh.

Bernardo: I understand.  …Excuse me, Gian.  It sounds like there’s an urgent call.

giandaivanu2-5-1 Gian: Yeah, go on ahead.  I’ll finish off the drinks here on my own.

Bernardo: I’ll be right back.

…And so Bernardo leaves with his man…

giandaivanu2-7-1b Gian: Sigh…

I sit there, alone – imbibing the smoke alone, downing the booze alone.  …I suppose in a way I’m drowning…  Drowning in the song, the accompaniment, the murmurs from the crowd…

Everything around me ignores me.  Nothing tries to fuss over me or take my life; they just leave me alone, passing me by…

…It feels nice.  It’s an atmosphere and time well worth the money.  …There’s just one thing…  Damn it, I can’t get that lady and Bernardo off my mind.

…Well, they’re together, sure as the Pope is Catholic.  …But, I never heard anything about this.

giandaivanu2-11-2 Gian: …Fucking shit.  This’s got nothing to do with me.

Just as I curse this…

Nastasha: …May I?

giandaivanu3-6-1 Gian: Wh-Whoa?!

At some point in time, the sweet singing siren had appeared right beside me.

…Huh?  I didn’t notice the song’d ended…  I guess that’s a shame, but…  Whee, what a predicament.

giandaivanu2-10-2 Gian: Y-Yeah.  Though Bernardo’s off elsewhere right now.

Nastasha: I know.  …Thank you.

I barely make it up in time to pull the seat out for the lady.  …That’s what I should do in this situation, right?

…I glance at the dame sitting to my left.

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: …Do you want a drink?  I’ll fill the glass…

I raise my hand to summon a waiter when the songstress responds,

Nastasha: Thank you, but this will be enough for me.

The lady takes a white-gloved hand and abducts Bernardo’s glass.  She sips at it with red, unexpectedly petite lips…

…Ah, I get it.  The ‘Bernardo and I are a thing’ sign, eh.  Yes, yes.  I get it, ma’am.

I fill up half her glass after it’s empty.  The singer stares down at the cup like it holds the key to Nirvana…  Neither I nor the lady make a peep.

But just when I think that…

Nastasha: So you are Mr. Giancarlo?

…I’m pathetic.  I flinched.  How’d she—

Nastasha: He mentioned you over the phone.

giandaivanu3-2-1b Gian: …Bernardo did?

Nastasha: Yes.  He said that there was a boy he’s known a long time in the family who is always getting into trouble.  He always talked about you.

…‘Boy,’ being … me?  …Well, I guess I am younger than Bernardo.

…I see.  This lady … is someone Bernardo can talk about the family to.

giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: Pardon me, but you’re…

Nastasha: Nastasha.  It sounds Russian but I’m really English.  …I’ve known Bernardo for about ten years now.

…Ten years…  What was I doing ten years ago?  School, maybe?

giandaivanu2-5-2 Gian: Is that so?  Guess you’ve known him longer than I have, then.

Nastasha: Yes, it does seem that way.

She giggles, her head slightly tilted.  …She seems older than me, but looks like she’s got some of the girliness still in her.  …But…

…Bernardo, hurry up and haul your ass back here…

Nastasha: It’s rare, though, that he would bring someone else to this place.

giandaivanu2-2-1b Gian: Really?  Oh, maybe because something good happened today.

Nastasha: Something good?

giandaivanu2-10-1 Gian: That’s a secret.

The woman named Nastasha chuckles and pours whisky into my glass, which had gone empty at some point in time, before saying,

Nastasha: Bernardo hasn’t dropped by at all recently.  I wonder … just what has been happening.

giandaivanu3-3-1 Gian: Oh.  You haven’t heard?  He’s been in the slammer for a while.

Nastasha: Oh, I have heard about that.  It was in the papers…  After that, though, he would only contact me by phone.  He’d never come visit.  Today’s the first time in a long time…

…I wonder if I can talk about the jailbreak business with her?

giandaivanu2-5-2 Gian: You know what our jobs are, right?  We’ve been busy for awhile.

Nastasha: I know.  …Men are all busy bees, the lot.

…Ngh, hurry up and get back here, Bernardo!!  …I never thought that drinking with someone else’s girl was gonna be this hard!

Bernardo: …Ana…

When Bernardo returns to his seat, her name trickles from his lips as he stares at the singer.

berndaivan2-2-2 Bernardo: What is going on?  Why…?

At his vaguely displeased tone, she replies,

Nastasha: Should I have not?  Can I not talk to the Mr. Giancarlo I’ve heard so much about?

berndaivan4-3-2 Bernardo: …

Bernardo wordlessly sends his subordinate back before slowly slumping back into his chair.  His face softens a bit.

berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: …I’m sorry I haven’t been able to make it recently.  It must’ve been trouble for you.

Nastasha: You’ll still be able … to come by in the future, right?

…Huh? I catch the faint but certain whiff of uncertainty tingeing her voice and eyes.

berndaivan4-8-2 Bernardo: I’ll be busy for the time being.  After I’ve crossed one mountain, yeah, I’ll come again…

Bernardo mumbled these words.  And then there’s me, fidgeting around in my seat.

Nastasha: …I told you before.  He frightens me so…!

berndaivan4-5-2b Bernardo: …I know.  I’ll talk to … to Dave.

…Eh?  What’d Bernardo say just now?!  Dave?  That’s…!  That’s that GD person we’re negotiating with!  The one that’s his acquaintance…

Nastasha: Then keep that man from coming here!  …Why won’t you do so?

berndaivan1-1-1 Bernardo: I will bring it up!  Still, Dave is an important business partner of ours.  Nothing will come from threatening him…

Nastasha: Then…!  You don’t care if he absconds with me, then?!

Bernardo: That’s not what I said.  …If he frightens you, I’ll assign men to guard this shop.

…Ahm…  The topic’s gotten quite heavy now…

So this means that the GD executive Bernardo’s negotiating with, Dave, is making moves on Bernardo’s girl?

Why’s Bernardo letting this happen?  Usually you’d whack him clear out of the ballpark, right?

…Is Dave … that important a person?

Nastasha: It would be better … if you were here, Bernie, not your men.  Could you … stay over tonight?

berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: …No.  As I said, I’m busy at the moment.  We have to return to work immediately after this.

…Somehow … I feel like she purposely brought this topic up because I’m here…

It’s probably just how much that Dave snake’s persistence’s driven her into a corner … and Bernardo’s coldness probably isn’t helping the matter either…

-For “tingeing,” do you mean tingling or something similar?
