Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 10 Best

Dave Owen

bg82

It’s then that, once again, the same subordinate from before jogs up to our seats, looking like he’d rather eat his tie.

Bernardo’s Subordinate A: …My apologies, but you have an urgent call…

bern82-2

Bernardo: I understand.  Sorry, Gian.  Ana.  I’ll be right back…

bg82

Bernardo looks relieved for some reason.  After he leaves…

Nastasha: Perhaps it’s because you’re here … that he’s acting a little cold…  When it’s just the two of us, he’s kinder and more passionate.

‘Oh.  Really,’ …is all I can say to something like that.  Nastasha watches my face intently before chuckling.

Nastasha: You.  You have quite a handsome face.

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: Wh-Where’d this come from…?

Nastasha: Be careful of him.  Who knows, he can be pretty indiscriminate.  Despite how Bernie usually acts, he’s a surprisingly perverted man.

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: S-Stop it with that.

Nastasha: Hah!  I apologize.

Oh crap…  Shit, my face’s sloshed with sweat right now…  I know, I know.  I’m awful at poker.  Can’t keep the face up.

Nastasha: …I’m sorry.  I might be a tad inebriated.

giandaivanu3-3-2 Gian: No…  Well, recently, Bernardo’s also been—

Nastasha: Ah…!

The songstress … isn’t listening to my words. Her eyes are pointed straight past me, and frozen at some point off to the side.  …I feel an unpleasant, tingling feeling skitter down my neck.

Something’s here.  The mood in the shop, the murmurs of the clients … it’s not like they vanished into thin air, but, in that instant, the very air weighed down on us.

giandaivanu2-11-2 Gian: …So that’s … him…

A man appears, wrapped up in a well-to-do, flashy suit.  An American dandy straight from the picture books.  …He looks a bit younger than Bernardo, I think…?

Five enormous, brawny fellows tag along behind him, all of them unashamedly advertising their thuggy status to the world.  Gangsters.  Specialists in violence and physical brutality.

He’s probably … no, there’s no question that this person is…

dave01 Dave: Hey there, Nastasha.  Wasn’t it your day off today?

She doesn’t respond, instead dropping her eyes down to the table.  …Perhaps it’s a good thing Bernardo isn’t here…

My eyes narrow into an arrow pointed straight at this man.  The toothpick-thin dandy looks back at me.

dave03 Dave: …Oh?

His expression flickers once before settling into a smile blaring sirens of ‘Danger!’  …The bastard … recognizes me?  And there’s a chance … he knows who I am…

dave01 Dave: Nastasha, when did you start sucking off dicks so high in the food chain?

When he says ‘high,’ I scent something repulsive and dangerous.  I stare straight at the pipecleaner, and…

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: …So you’re Dave, Mr. Big Boy of the grave-digging gang.

GD Soldier A: Hey you!  Watch your pretty mouth, you pun—

My voice immediately sparks the fuses of the thugs standing behind him, but … Dave reels the man back with a smirk.

dave01 Dave: All of you, outside.  …What perfect timing.  Why don’t we chat about business here?

GD Soldier A: But … Boss, he—!

dave03 Dave: I believe I said to wait outside.

The musclehead cowers at his one-liner before taking the rest of the men out with him and making themselves scarce.  Then…

The man, the GD executive, sits directly opposite Nastasha.

The Dave man shifts his eyes from me to our table … and catches onto the stump of tobacco Bernardo’d left behind.

dave01 Dave: Oh?  Is Bernie here, too?  What fortunate circumstances for two heavyweights of the CR:5 to grace me with their presence!
giandaivanu2-2-1b Gian: So, you know me?
dave01 Dave: I’ve seen your handsome visage in the papers.  I’ve also heard rumors about you, Mr. Second Boss, Capo del Monte.  Giancarlo, was it?

…This bastard even knows I’m the next Boss!

dave01 Dave: I’m one of the executives from Rockwell, David Owen.  Bernie calls me Dave, though.

As expected, he doesn’t go out and announce his affiliation with a gang.  …As I thought, he’s…

giandaivanu2-11-1b Gian: You’ve got quite the balls to bring so many of your men and traipsing through CR:5 territory.
dave03 Dave: You’ll be the ones in trouble if something untoward befalls me, right?  Besides, I’m here as a peace feeler.  If you point your guns at me, it’ll only hurt your own reputation.
dave01 Dave: …Am I wrong?

…Damn it, he’s a fucking irritating bastard.  Bursting at the seams with confidence…

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: And…?  What was it you wanted to talk about?

Skinny flashes a self-assured grin towards Nastasha and says,

dave02 Dave: My apologies, Nastasha.  It appears I won’t have the time to listen to one of your songs and find words befitting their beauty.

Nastasha: I … must be going now—

giandaivanu2-5-2 Gian: Yeah, I’ll pass the message to Bernardo.

After the lady leaves … Dave, with cigarette in mouth, lights it with a lighter shining with a coat of pure gold.

dave01 Dave: Where would Bernie – oh, pardon me – Mr. Ortolani be?
giandaivanu1-3-1 Gian: Thanks to a certain someone, he’s bustling busy as a bee now.  …He’s on the phone now.  He could be calling our troops over right now.
dave02 Dave: Oh, you’re preparing an escort for me as well?  This may not have reached your ears, but … I am just about the only one of the GD considering ceasefire with you.  The criticism has been buffeting me quite strongly these days.

…Damn it, he’s a wily bastard.

dave03 Dave: Right now is not the time to be fighting a war of futility.  Not for the CR:5, and not for the GD.  But if we don’t combine forces, everything we own will be taken by outsiders.

…Silver-tongued snake.  Just hearing this, it’d sound like he’s this super logical, super just person.

giandaivanu1-9-1 Gian: I see.  And?  Even if we shake hands, where’s the proof you don’t have a knife hidden up your sleeve?
dave02 Dave: Why, we are facing the same apprehensions here, which is why … this talk will never go anywhere if we don’t trust each other, got it?

With a pinched face, I drain out the glass.  No way he’s taking my drink, too.  The way he’s spouting reason … pisses me off.

…If he were such a fan of reason, could he have become an executive in a gang in the first place?

It’s then … I sense Bernardo standing behind me.

bern82-2

Bernardo: …Dave, why are you—

dave01 Dave: Hey there, Bernie.  …Oh, excuse me.  Don Ortolani, my apologies for taking your seat in your absence.

bg82

Bernardo sits.  …A few breath’s silence.

Bernardo taps his finger, and a waiter brings up a new bottle and glass.

berndaivan1-1-1 Bernardo: …Did you know we’d be coming?
dave02 Dave: How could I?  Today was a mere coincidence.  Originally, I had no plans of coming to this place because it was Nastasha’s day off.
berndaivan4-5-1 Bernardo: Are you still making moves on her?

Crack.  The air around us splinters in my ears.

dave01 Dave: No, I’m just a fan of her songs.  If I unsettled her, I apologize.
dave02 Dave: What about you?  If you hadn’t been incarcerated … you would’ve settled down with Nastasha by now, right?  If you had, there’d been fewer pests to worry about.

…’Settle down?’  Bernardo’s already gone that far…?  Bernardo drains his glass with a bitter grimace.

dave01 Dave: Let’s return to business, shall we?  It’s not every day we are graced with the presence of the upcoming Capo.
berndaivan4-3-1 Bernardo:Where did you hear that?
dave02 Dave: Unfortunately for you, I have my own contacts.
dave01 Dave: ….The CR:5 Capo, Alessandro, is currently missing.  It’s just about become a rumor among the respectables, too.
giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Wha—?!
berndaivan2-1-2 Bernardo: …!

The bastard … knows that, too?!

bern82-2

Bernardo: …Are you going to include that in our negotiation terms?

dave03 Dave: Oh dear, no.  I said, didn’t I?  Right now, the CR:5’s survival is to our gain.  Isn’t that right, Bernardo?

bg82

Dave puffs at his cigarette.

dave01 Dave: We’re old friends, aren’t we?  Can’t we be more frank with each other?  I’ve always been on your side for as long as we’ve known each other.
berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: …Dave, I owe you a debt, but … I am currently representing my family.  If I am going to let my personal feelings cloud my judgment, then I will step down.

For a second, Dave’s eyes sharpen … but he hides them immediately.

dave01 Dave: I see.  No wonder why everyone trusts you so much.
dave03 Dave: I will put together the conditions for the treaty for our next executive meeting.  Bernardo, you handle your end.
giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: And what would those conditions be, if you don’t mind?

Dave looks at me at my interruption, and his lips curl up into a sneer.  …It’s like the inviting flash of brilliant teeth at the end of a commercial, but … then we find the ad is for a high-interest loan.  Something stinks.

dave01 Dave: If you accept the conditions, the others will follow, correct?  We’ve decided, ‘Upon forging peace with the CR:5 … the GD will request territory from Daivan in exchange.’

Without thinking, my ass’s flown off the seat.  I’m instantly on my feet and already reeling back to sock him in the face.

berndaivan4-9-2 Bernardo: Stop, Gian…!

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: No fucking way…!  Hell, you guys’re just bringing that up to provoke us ’cause you knew there’s no way we’d accept that!

bern82-2

Bernardo: …Unfortunately, just the other day, we decided among us captains that we wouldn’t hand over one road, one grain of sand from Daivan.

With me, on my feet and barely holding back from slaughtering him right here and now, and Bernardo in front of him, Dave starts waving his hands about between us like he’s yielding.

dave02 Dave: Whoa there, it’s not like I think those conditions would work either.  However, I have to make the members of my side say yes.  The land is what we need to do that.
dave01 Dave: But … I’ve prepared a workable alternative.  Would you like to hear what that is?

bg82

…I feel like cold slugs or ants are plastered all down the back of my neck.  Bernardo makes an expression like he’s feeling the same thing.

berndaivan4-4-2 Bernardo: Money?  Or … do you want a concession of some sort?
dave03 Dave: Both wrong.  What I propose is … our organizations place men in the other’s ranks.  This way, we can fortify the relationship between us and secure communications.
giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: What…?  You want us to enter a gang?!
dave01 Dave: We’d also be dragged into the Mafia, don’t forget.  …However, exchanging lackeys down below won’t accomplish anything.  Instead…
dave01 Dave: I hope to have the CR:5 accept our men on the executive and director level and their respective troops.  If you accept this, this talk about ceding territory never happened.
giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: …?!  Wh-What the hell are you saying…?!  How the fuck can medigan thugs like you become Cosa Nostra captains?!

It’s impossible.  There’s no way we can add more captains, not to mention from a gang, into our five…

bern82-2

Bernardo: …Do you really think that our captains will accept this?

dave03 Dave: …Please consider it, Bernardo.  We don’t have time to play tug-of-war forever.
dave02 Dave: If we don’t come to an agreement soon … the ones in trouble will be the ones without a leader, right?  If word of your Boss’s absence leaks to the public, the citizens of this fine city won’t back you anymore.

bern82-3

Bernardo: …Gh…

bg82

Bernardo gives a small growl.  …Damn it, stupid, scrawny, show-off…!  …Ah, I kind of understand now.

The reason he’s so piss annoying is because every single thing he says has got some logic … but more importantly, he knows exactly what hurts most and pinpoints it every single time.

berndaivan4-5-2b Bernardo: …I can’t make this decision on my own.
dave02 Dave: Despite … your Second being here?

Bastard…  I’m seriously considering calling in the troops in and wiping him off the slate now.

berndaivan4-8-2 Bernardo: I will bring it up in the Administration meeting.  I plan to give a reply as soon as possible.
berndaivan4-9-2 Bernardo: Also … withdraw your gang from Daivan.  Don’t take action for the time being.  Otherwise, I can’t persuade the captains.
dave01 Dave: Sure, I’ll tell them.  I trust you, Bernardo.  For me … I hope this erases the debt between us and now you’ll treat me as an equal, like brothers or pals, from here on.
dave02 Dave: That’s how I’ve always thought of us.

bern82-2

Bernardo: …I will definitely return the debt….

bg82

dave01 Dave: I’ll be waiting.  See you.  Give my regards to Nastasha.

Dave stands and leaves the establishment, never looking back as though we’d vanished into thin air.

    Some suggestions:
“The son”gstress5 … isn’t listening to my words. Her eyes are pointed straight past me, and frozen at some point off to the side. …I feel an unpleasant, tingling feeling skitter down my neck.”
-Well, there shouldn’t be a “5” with the word songstress.
-Maybe there needs to be a comma after tingling? I am not too sure about this
    suggestion.
Gian: You’ve got quite the balls to bring so many of your men and traipsing through CR:5 territory.
-Do you possibly mean “trespassing” instead of “traipsing?” Because I looked
up the definition for traipse, and it means to walk aimlessly. Though it’s other
definition also means to walk over and tramp…maybe that is what you have in
    mind.
[dave02]Dave: Oh, you’re preparing an escort for me as well? This may not have reached your ears, but … I am just about the only one of the GD considering ceasefire with you. The criticism has been buffeting me quite strongly these days.
-Hm, I don’t think that “[dave02]” should be there.
ave: Right now is not the time to be fighting a war of futility. Not for the CR:5, and not for the GD. But if we don’t combine forces, everything we own will be taken by outsiders.
-The name “Dave” seems to be cut off due to the picture.
Dave: Oh dear, no. I said, didn’t I? Right now, the CR:5′s survival is to our gain. Isn’t that right, Bernardo?
-Could there be the word “this” put in right after the word “said?”
Dave: I see. No wonder why everyone trusts you so much.
-In my opinion, maybe the word “why” shouldn’t be necessary. Though this is
    merely my opinion.

This had been bugging me since Bernie says his name.. Dave Owen. Does this sketchy dude related to the prisoner no.16? They did says his name is Owen too right? But I guess its completely unrelated just curious and makes me wonder why no one pointed it out like they totally forgot bout it xD I guess its because we have choices of escape routes that they dont bother much with the details(?) and uncertain which flag the player get for the escape route.

Its just I like to poke on those little things *.* On totally unrelated note your translation as always Eccelente! that includes all those bad end that makes even me squeamish ^_^; I feel like you should be awarded or something like that xD
