Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 12

Welcoming Present

choice18-run-2

bg64

giandaivanu2-8-1 Gian: Fucking shit…  I should’ve skipped when I had the chance, too…

…Never thought Bernardo’d get the drop on me…  Just what was that yesterday?

giandaivanu4-8-2 Gian: Ha … Haha…  Maybe he wanted to give it … one last shot…?

…But then, why…

bg00

Why was he so half-hearted?  …I don’t know.  There’s too much in the shadows…

bg61

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: …Tsk.  It’s this time already?

Staying in the hotel’s distorted the passage of time.  The sky I can see through the gaps in the curtain are already dark with night.  …Maybe it’s because I’m on the ends of my nerves, but even though I have an empty stomach I’m not hungry.

When I go to return to my room…

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: Hm…?

The guards standing in front of Bernardo’s workroom have disappeared.  There’s probably no one inside…

bg00

It’s impossible.  No way they’d leave the door to this room half-open like this…  The inside of the room’s completely dark.

bg61

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: Ah yeah…  There’s no one to pick up the calls anymore…

I turn my back to the eerie black when…

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: …Ah?!

bg00     bern66-1

Bernardo: …If … the power goes out in the workroom again…  If the fuse blows out again…  I’ll be counting on you again, Gian.

bg00     bg61

Something in both my brain and my gut prickles and bristles.  I hear the words Bernardo had said that time in my ears again.

And…

Here’s Bernardo’s room, pitch-black behind the half-open door…  Someone’s turned off the power…?  No…

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: What…?  The fuse blew out again…?

bg00

Click.

It’s unadulterated darkness inside the room.  It takes a while for my eyes to adjust, but after that I can make out the faint starlight shining in from the window.

bg133

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: It’s so quiet now…

The incessantly ringing phones.  The man who’d been in charge of this electronic bastion, who’d maintained multiple conversations and blasted off multiple orders into multiple receivers at once …

That man … is no longer here.  Will he ever come back…?

bg00

“If the fuse blows out again…”

bg133

Bernardo’s words come to life again in the darkness.

…I can’t see a thing.  I’d thought if I came here, I’d find something, but … at this rate, I’d probably trip and fall flat on my face.

I shuffle over to the switchboard and flip open the metal door covering the hole in the wall.

With only a dim light as my guide, I try to swap out the glass tube in the fuse with a spare…  …Huh…?

There’s … no fuse inserted in the first place…?  The metal conductor clips were stark empty from the start.  I’ve got no idea what’s going on, but either way I stick in the new fuse.

That’s all it takes.

bg64

giandaivanu4-5-1 Gian: Agh…!

The room’s illuminated bright enough to pierce my eyes.  This is the room – Bernardo’s room – that I’m familiar with, though its king is absent…

giandaivanu4-2-1 Gian: Huh?

When I go to close the switchboard … something at the corner of my vision catches my eye.

giandaivanu3-2-1b Gian: The hell … is this…?

Inside the switchboard … down inside the machinery built straight in this hole that’d been gouged out of the wall … down inside a corner of the space between the walls…  There’s something there…

Rustle.

There wasn’t anything like this before.  I reach in and haul it out.  It’s an old worn-out canvas bag.  …It’s stuffed chock-full with something.

…It’s not too heavy, not too light…?  I try popping open the rusting fasteners.

giandaivanu3-11-1 Gian: H-Holy shit!

At first, I couldn’t even recognize what was in front of me.  Some time passes before my dizzy brain and eyes could even start processing the contents of the bag.

…Inside was cash.  A load of it.  Ten dollar bills, five dollar, and even Ben Franklins.  The old, used bills are packed into bundles…

And I don’t know how many bundles there are.  …What … is this?

I suddenly gasp and look up around me.  …Of course, there’s no one else here.  I turn my eyes back down towards the bag.

Besides the bundles of green, there’s … an old pistol, like the kind you see in those Westerns … and a single sheet of notepad paper.

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Don’t tell me … Bernardo…

The unmistakable scrawl covers the paper.  It’s handwriting I’ve seen countless times lying on his desk…

On the paper…

bg00

Bernardo: ‘To Gian: by the time you have noticed this, the CR:5 is most likely in a somewhat precarious position.

Bernardo: ‘I apologize to everyone and to you for taking action without informing you.  However, if I hadn’t, then I wouldn’t have been able to catch Dave off-guard.  This was the only way.

Bernardo: ‘At this rate, I won’t be the only one at risk.  The family – CR:5 itself – will fall to ruin by my foolishness.

Bernardo: ‘I’m sorry for always being so selfish.  I will talk to Dave.  This whole time, I’ve always been hesitant.  Always running.

Bernardo: ‘However, I have no more doubts.  It’s thanks to you.  I will talk to him and settle our past.  If he has truly turned on me…

Bernardo: ‘I won’t return.  I will probably be dead.  Should that happen, Gian, I … wonder if you can bring the family together in my stead…

Bernardo: ‘Whether you take this money and run like the wind is up to you.  Please, I hope you can live your life.

Bernardo: ‘If you can live the life you choose … that would be enough to give my life and death meaning.  I can pass from this world with you in my thoughts.

Bernardo: ‘It’s only at such a time that I’ve realized … I’m a fool.  You’re the best, Honey.  With love.’

… … …

bg64

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: The hell … is this…?

This letter he left behind … and the money…  Don’t tell me he’d been planning on doing this since last night…?

He’d prepared this … knowing that he wouldn’t be able to come back here … that he might be killed during his talks with them…

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Bernardo…!  That … fucking…
giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Stupid idiot…  There’s no way he’d let you get away alive.

Bernardo…  He probably had his suspicions about that snake Dave, but because there was that debt in the past … he just couldn’t cut ties…

And now … It’s like he carried himself straight to the gallows.  He’s probably – no, there’s no way he’s not dead already.

What … do I do?

Bam.

giandaivanu4-3-2 Gian: …Shit!  Bernardo, you fucking idiot!

I’m still the only person who knows about this.  Luchino and the others all think Bernardo’s gone and turned on us and probably won’t listen to me.

…And, they don’t know about this money either…

giandaivanu4-6-2 Gian: Shit!  I … I’m the Lucky Dog…!  What ‘m I gonna do?  What should I…?!

bg00

Bernardo’s not in this world anymore.  All I have now … is enough cash to live a life of luxury for three lifetimes.

…Has Bernardo already been whacked?  Or was he just captured…  And if he’s just being held captive, then…

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Either way, it’s already way too late…

Maybe I can negotiate.  Save Bernardo with this money.  This should be enough that even the GD wouldn’t turn a blind eye.

But … I’m the only one who knows about this cash.  Even if I tell everyone, they’d just get suspicious.  If that’s the case, then…

giandaivanu4-3-2 Gian: I’ve gotta do it … on my own…

I pick up the green-laden bag.  And, I also take the file of phone numbers sitting on Bernardo’s desk and stuff it into the bag.

I might be able to reach the GD with this, and then if he’s alive, then I can trade this cash for his life…

…And if Bernardo’s already gone from this world…

…then I could run with this much money.

…If I stay here, then I’ll be the center of the CR:5…

bg61

I shoulder the bag and leave Bernardo’s room behind.  …Perfect timing.  There’s no captains in the lounge.  Not even a guard around.

Looks like they were all sent away.  Look at that luck.  I push the elevator button and wait for the pulleys to bring up the cage.

bg00

…First, I’ve got to get out of here.

If the others find me with this money, I can’t explain it away…  I’ve got to hide it somewhere outside of the hotel.

bg83

I spot several familiar faces among the soldiers on the main floor, but no one’s paying a speck of attention to me.  They’re all huddled among themselves in some kind of discussion.

…Even the soldiers are getting ready to jump ship…

bg60

I head for the exit as casually and slow as I can so I don’t catch the soldiers’ attentions…  I ask the bellboy to call for a taxi.

Driver: Where are you heading?

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Lessee…

…First, I need someplace to lie low with the cash.  The apartment I live in … is out.  They’ll find that in a jiffy.

It’ll probably be safer to leave Daivan all together and find a motel in the outskirts.  If I can bury the money somewhere, then…

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: Head for the highway ramp — the one where all the motels are.

I hand over a ten to the driver to stave off any more questions before sitting back into my seat.  The taxi moves out into the traffic, endless even at midnight.

bg86

giandaivanu2-7-2 Gian: …Bernardo…

…It took no effort at all to leave the hotel.  No one to question me…  Can I find Bernardo like this…?

Or … should I just make my getaway like this…?

…Shit.  My head’s spinning ’round and ’round and I haven’t got a clue.  First, I’ve gotta lay low.  I’ll get some shuteye, and then think about this…

Driver: Hm?  What’s this?

Suddenly I notice … the single Chrysler sedan, gray with dirt, running right alongside the taxi.

From the open window, a man wearing some off-the-rack suit…  A businessman-looking guy I’d never seen before honks the horn and yells something at the cabbie.

…What’s going on?

The cabbie rolls down the window…

Driver: What’s that?  I can’t hear you…!

Through the open window, something…  Something comes flying from the Chrysler’s passenger side into the taxi…

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: What—  Gh!!

bg00     bg000

bg00     bg000

bg86

The black hunk that rolled to the cabbie’s feet starts shaking, smoke spurting from its fuse.  A grenade.  When my eyes register the sight, the scream rips from my throat, and…

giandaivanu3-4-1b Gian: Aaaaaaah!!
