Part 3: Daivan

Chapter 12 Best

Vanishing Act

Thump.  Thump.

luchidaivan1-5-1 Luchino: …Hey, Gian…!  …Tsk, Christ.  Wake up, Gian…!

…Hm?  Whassat…?

luchidaivan4-8-2 Luchino: How long’re you going to stay asleep?!  How old are you, two?!

bg68     luchi68-4

Slap.  Slap.

A large hand slaps my cheek, ripping sleep from my eyes.

giandaivanu1-1-2 Gian: Lu…chino…?  Oh … right, wasn’t there some meeting now?  I’m up, I’m up…

I rub at my eyes, besieged by the too-bright light…  It’s then…

Luchino: Bernardo’s gone.  …It looks like he left without notifying any of us.

Luchino gives voice to the worst possibility imaginable.

bg00     bg106

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: You serious…?

Luchino: It looks like he left at daybreak on his own.  I asked his men about where his whereabouts, but…

Luchino’s Subordinate A: I happened to be in the parking lot at the time…  Don Ortolani had stated that he had informed his subordinates of his destination and took his own car.  However…

Bernardo’s Subordinate A: …We never heard a word from anyone, and Comandante’s car hasn’t returned yet…

…Bernardo…  Then, does this mean he left in his own car, alone, without a single guard, for someplace before morning…?

…To where?!

Ivan: Fucking shit!  See, what’d I tell you?!  I said something like this’d happen, and looks like I hit the nail on the head!

giandaivanu3-4-1 >Gian: What…?!  The hell you saying, you moron?!  Bernardo’s probably—!

…Everyone’s silent gazes focus on me.

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: He’s probably just headed out for negotiations, right…?  Why’s the speculations head straight for ‘Oh, he ran away’ or ‘Oh, he turned on us’?!

Luchino: …

Giulio: ……

Silence was the only response to my flimsy defense of Bernardo.

Bernardo’s … vanished.  Slipped away from us, the CR:5.

And, on top of that, in the worst possible situation, at the worst possible timing…

cavalli3 Cavalli: The other day, when he had headed out to negotiate with the GD…  Even if he had kept it a secret from you, he had contacted me beforehand…
cavalli3 Cavalli: However, this time, he hasn’t notified either me or his own men before disappearing.
giuliodaivan1-4-1 Giulio: In addition, several men directly below him are … also missing.  It … is not strange to have suspicions.
giandaivanu3-11-1 Gian: B-But … we could wait a bit longer for a call or…
cavalli3 Cavalli: Sigh…  That fool…

Ivan: Hey, Gian.  Ya know, we’re not questioning him just ‘cause we feel like it.

Ivan: Before, you guys borrowed my men, right?

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Y-Yeah.  It was to move the money.

Ivan: I had those same men look into it.  That ghost account the family uses?  He withdrew a whole fucking shitload of cash from there!

Ivan: You know the only one who can handle the money in there’s … Bernardo, right?

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: …!

Giulio: Signor Gian, I understand how you feel…  However … with this sudden disappearance occurring in conjunction with the cash withdrawal … it is likely…

bg000     transition129

I feel like … the air is suddenly heavy with the stench of blood.  Omertà, a blood oath.  If Bernardo had really betrayed us, then…

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: Th-Then … what’re we gonna do…?
cavalli3Cavalli: …So long as that damn Alessandro doesn’t miraculously turn up here … the situation is unchanged.

Giulio: There is … no more meaning to stalling.

Ivan: We’ve got only one choice!  Before they can come rushing in here, let’s beat that damn shitty Rockwell city of theirs to a pulp!

Luchino: That … is an option.  A better one than being tortured and popped.

…What a despairing, portentous meeting.

…Bernardo, that dolt!  He knew this’d happen!  Why’d he…?!

bg00     bg62

The fruitless conference ended in everyone’s abject disappointment and despair.

…What … should I do…?

I need to believe in Bernardo … even after everything…

giandaivanu4-8-2 Gian: Haha…  Come on, man, what a time to start worrying ‘bout this…!  It’s not like we’re mere acquaintances anymore.

…The words I say to myself resonate emptily.  But … now that I’ve come this far, there’s no pulling back.  Even without looking back, I can tell…

The only thing behind me is a sheer precipice.

…Then what’s up ahead?  Nothing but pitch-black darkness.

giandaivanu3-13-2 Gian: Th-There’s no way but forward…!

bg0     bg62

I slap my face.  Arm myself with flimsy pep.  …I’ll believe in Bernardo … even in this worst possible situation…

…He probably … no!  No!  There’s no way he’s run!  There’s no way…!

He probably headed straight to Dave to negotiate the usual, and after that … they turned on him.  And then … they’re keeping him captive, or maybe he’s already dead…

giandaivanu4-3-2 Gian: Shit…  What should I do…?

…What should I do…?

bg00     bg61

giandaivanu3-3-2c Gian: …Tsk.  It’s this time already?

Staying in the hotel’s distorted the passage of time.  The sky I can see through the gaps in the curtain are already dark with night.  …Maybe it’s because I’m on the ends of my nerves, but even though I have an empty stomach I’m not hungry.

When I go to return to my room…

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: Hm…?

The guards standing in front of Bernardo’s workroom have disappeared.  There’s probably no one inside…

It’s impossible.  No way they’d leave the door to this room half-open like this…  The inside of the room’s completely dark.

giandaivanu2-9-2 Gian: Ah yeah…  There’s no one to pick up the calls anymore…

I turn my back to the eerie black when…

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: …Ah?!

bg00     bern66-1

Bernardo: …If … the power goes out in the workroom again…  If the fuse blows out again…  I’ll be counting on you again, Gian.

bg00     bg61

Something in both my brain and my gut prickles and bristles.  I hear the words Bernardo had said that time in my ears again.

Here’s Bernardo’s room, pitch-black behind the half-open door…  Someone’s turned off the power…?  No…

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: What…?  The fuse blew out again…?

It’s unadulterated darkness inside the room.  It takes a while for my eyes to adjust, but after that I can make out the faint starlight shining in from the window.

giandaivanu2-1-2b Gian: It’s so quiet now…

The incessantly ringing phones.  The man who’d been in charge of this electronic bastion, who’d maintained multiple conversations and blasted off multiple orders into multiple receivers at once …

That man … is no longer here.  Will he ever come back…?

“If the fuse blows out again…”

Bernardo’s words come to life again in the darkness.

…I can’t see a thing.  I’d thought if I came here, I’d find something, but … at this rate, I’d probably trip and fall flat on my face.

I shuffle over to the switchboard and flip open the metal door covering the hole in the wall.

With only a dim light as my guide, I try to swap out the glass tube in the fuse with a spare…  …Huh…?

There’s … no fuse inserted in the first place…?  The metal conductor clips were stark empty from the start.  I’ve got no idea what’s going on, but either way I stick in the new fuse.

That’s all it takes.

giandaivanu4-5-1 Gian: Agh…!

The room’s illuminated bright enough to pierce my eyes.  This is the room – Bernardo’s room – that I’m familiar with, though its king is absent…

giandaivanu4-2-1 Gian: Huh?

When I go to close the switchboard … something at the corner of my vision catches my eye.

giandaivanu3-2-1b Gian: The hell … is this…?

Inside the switchboard … down inside the machinery built straight in this hole that’d been gouged out of the wall … down inside a corner of the space between the walls…  There’s something there…

There wasn’t anything like this before.  I reach in and haul it out.  It’s an old worn-out canvas bag.  …It’s stuffed chock-full with something.

…It’s not too heavy, not too light…?  I try popping open the rusting fasteners.

giandaivanu3-11-1 Gian: H-Holy shit!

At first, I couldn’t even recognize what was in front of me.  Some time passes before my dizzy brain and eyes could even start processing the contents of the bag.

…Inside was cash.  A load of it.  Ten dollar bills, five dollar, and even Ben Franklins.  The old, used bills are packed into bundles…

And I don’t know how many bundles there are.  …What … is this?

I suddenly gasp and look up around me.  …Of course, there’s no one else here.  I turn my eyes back down towards the bag.

Besides the bundles of green, there’s … an old pistol, like the kind you see in those Westerns … and a single sheet of notepad paper.

giandaivanu3-1-1b Gian: Don’t tell me … Bernardo…

The unmistakable scrawl covers the paper.  It’s handwriting I’ve seen countless times lying on his desk…

On the paper…

Bernardo: ‘To Gian: by the time you have noticed this, the CR:5 is most likely in a somewhat precarious position.

Bernardo: ‘I apologize to everyone and to you for taking action without informing you.  However, if I hadn’t, then I wouldn’t have been able to catch Dave off-guard.  This was the only way.

Bernardo: ‘At this rate, I won’t be the only one at risk.  The family – CR:5 itself – will fall to ruin by my foolishness.

Bernardo: ‘I’m sorry for always being so selfish.  I will talk to Dave.  This whole time, I’ve always been hesitant.  Always running.

Bernardo: ‘However, I have no more doubts.  It’s thanks to you.  I will talk to him and settle our past.  If he has truly turned on me…

Bernardo: ‘I won’t return.  I will probably be dead.  Should that happen, Gian, I … wonder if you can bring the family together in my stead…

Bernardo: ‘Whether you take this money and run like the wind is up to you.  Please, I hope you can live your life.

Bernardo: ‘If you can live the life you choose … that would be enough to give my life and death meaning.  I can pass from this world with you in my thoughts.

Bernardo: ‘It’s only at such a time that I’ve realized … I’m a fool.  You’re the best, Honey.  With love.’

… … …

giandaivanu4-2-2 Gian: The hell … is this…?

This letter he left behind … and the money…  Don’t tell me he’d been planning on doing this since last night…?

He’d prepared this … knowing that he wouldn’t be able to come back here … that he might be killed during his talks with them…

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Bernardo…!  That … fucking…
giandaivanu4-3-2 Gian: Stupid fucking idiot!  Don’t just … go off and do shit on your own!  Fuck!

I punch the bag of money.  I curl up, groan despite the lack of tears coming out.  Smother myself.  …What the hell…!

What do you want me to do with something like this?!  Leaving me with nothing but cash…!!  …You telling me to lead a long-lived, wretched fake of a life?!

giandaivanu2-8-2 Gian: Fucking four-eyed pervert…!  I’m gonna sock him in the face!!

…Bernardo might’ve already been whacked.  But I throw away the possibility.

With the anger at Bernardo as my fuel, I move…

giandaivanu1-6-2 Gian: Shit … what do I do…?!

Report to all the captains…  No.  There’s no way they won’t suspect him with something like this.  The only person in the world who’d believe Bernardo after seeing this letter…

…is me.

Then, what can I do on my own…?  How can I look for Bernardo…?  How can I save Bernardo…?

giandaivanu4-3-2 Gian: The fuck do you want me to do…?!

Of all people, I’m now Bernardo’s last thread of hope.  Me, the most useless one in the whole family.  …What should I do…?

    Thank you for updating! ^.^
I have been waiting for so long to read the rest of this. >.
Luchino: It looks like he left at daybreak on his own. I asked his men about where his whereabouts, but…

The “where” is not really needed, I think.
