Sorcerous Stabber Orphen translations
(art from Zerochan, but I’m 99% sure it’s official art.)
A popular but fairly old series that has never been translated to my knowledge. I am honestly a bit confused as to what makes up this series, but it looks like the series is split into three portions – the main journey, a side story (that’s kind of a prequel), and an actual prequel. The first is commonly known as the Haguretabi (はぐれ旅), the second as Mubouhen (無謀編), and the last as Mawarimichi (まわり道). Haguretabi itself is split into 3-4 sections, based off publishing date and time skips (from what I can tell).
There are also two anime series (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Begins and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Revenge) and one 6-volume manga series that have all been localized in English. In addition, there is a Playstation 2 game that has been released in English as well.
My main motivation for translating this series is that it is fairly simple, but fairly old (despite the recent republishing) and, most of all, that no one else has worked on it yet.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
Summary:
Orphen is a wandering sorceror who does odd-end jobs to try to scrape a living by, often provided to or brought on him by the two dwarves Dortin and Volcan. Well, technically he lends money out, but no one ever seems to return it. Once upon a time, he was one of the students at the Tower of Fang, a school for sorcerors, along with a girl named Azalie. However, an accident happened which caused Azalie to be proclaimed dead and, in disgust, Orphen left. He has been searching for any sign of Azalie since but has turned up nothing. And then, one day Volcan brings him a job that leads him to a clue about Azalie’s whereabouts…
Disclaimer: Do not own anything other than a Chinese dubbed (and non-pirated!) version of one of the anime series (I can’t even tell which one it is…) and the twenty books from the main series. The series is written by Akita Yoshinobu (秋田禎信) and is illustrated by Kusaka Yuuya (草河遊也).
Translation Notes & Information
Help:
I heard that there are .pdfs of the books somewhere online. If anyone knows where .pdfs of the books are, could you please let me know? It’ll be easier to translate (and use the pictures) from the file than from the book itself. Otherwise I will be typing one-handedly (with the book in the other hand) and taking camera photos of the images. I am currently looking for Haguretabi Part 1.

omg I just noticed this thread o.o; You translated Orphen!!! I’ve been looking for the translations for the novel for forever, especially since bakatsuki didn’t pick up the project ;_; I got hooked onto the anime 6 years back, especially considering the period the show itself was released 8D I love the classics like slayers and stellvia(too many to name T_T) since the stories and character development for those are much better thought out and a lot of the recent stories basically come from those classics~ Thanks so much for translating this :D!

I’ve found some stuff that will help you alot, a scanned version of the novels and a text version in a text document.
Scanned Books – lix.in/-4c4f81

Hope this stuff helps you with your translation, though the text version is a mini side story book and the main books 2-20. Don’t know why the first one wasn’t included. I also scanlated the cover and posted it on baka-tsuki

You’ll have to put the http thing in yourself since it wouldn’t let me post

Thank you for your help! I’ve taken a look and yes, these are the right books 🙂 The only thing is that it has Mawarimichi instead of book 1, as you stated, but … that’s all right. At least it has the other 19 books, haha!
It was probably an uploading error on their part ^^;;
Anyways, thank you for the links! They’ll help a lot o_o

Let’s say the project is Pending. Troubles have come up with it, simply because of my current status as a translator. Well, not that that changes much, tbh. I haven’t worked on it lately because I’ve been so busy. But thank you for showing interest. I really need to get working on that…

I desperately want to read these novels. The Orphen anime series was my first experience with anime. Now that I’m older, I see how poor the series actually was, but nostalgia and my love of wizards keeps me interested in Orphen. I’ve heard the novels redeem the series, but as I only know English I’m unable to read them; so I’m reliant on you, sir, for the translation. Please don’t give up on this endeavour. Please, and thank you. ❤

Thank you so much for the encouragement. Unfortunately, at the moment, there are numerous obstacles standing in my way of doing a translation, but I do plan on continuing my translation, at least privately, when I am less busy. I will rememver your email for then (though it may be years).
I’ve actually only recently started watching the anime, to be honest. I watched it once as a kid, but that was a LONG time ago, and only season 1. I will say that, having read the first five or so novels, the books are definitely more thorough, but the anime does some interesting things to make a light novel series more appetizing to the usual anime-watching audience. It’s actually kind of fascinating, really.
That being said, what I really love about the novels is the mythos, which is largely absent from the anime (for exposition reasons). There were also some loopholes and such introduced in the anime (such as Reki’s inactivity) that were also introduced because of the format. The Dragons and translating the Mage spells are my favourite parts 🙂
I really do hope to keep working on Orphen, so we’ll see how life pans out.
Again, thanks for the comment! ❤

I don’t mind waiting. It’ll be a treat for future me.
In the meantime I’ll give the anime another go.
Certain aspects of lore always appeal to me, and spells, glorious spells, are definitely my favourite. I really loved the spells in Bastard!!, too; they were all based off of heavy metal band names.
Good luck to your future. I hope your obstacles are eliminated and your goals realised!
