“Kagome, Kagome” is a popular children’s chant. I’ve taken liberties in translation to better fit the song and kanji.

Caged Bird

Lady in the cage, O lady in the cage, when
Will you take wing? In the evening of dawn,
The crane and turtle slipped. Who’s the face behind you?

The trapped bird in a cage, bound by chain,
Was told, “The sky is a scary place.”

Then one day she became a woman, and in being bound knew love,
Intoxicated by the words, “Please stay here forever.”

Perhaps it’s all a lie.

Lady in the cage, O lady in the cage, when
Will you take wing? In the evening of dawn,
The crane and turtle slipped. Who’s the face behind you?

The bird, not knowing how to fly, was bound to the earth,
And so she made herself believe, “I’ll never yearn for the sky.”

Then one day she knew man, and drowning in pleasure, she died,
Intoxicated by the wish, “I want to ascend to heaven someday.”

Perhaps it’ll never come true.

Stoop, stoop down low. When
Will the bird in the cage take wing? In the evening of dawn,
The crane and turtle slipped. Who’s the face behind you?

Lady in the cage, O lady in the cage, when
Will you take wing? In the evening of dawn,
The crane and turtle slipped. Who’s the face behind you?

Stoop, stoop down low. When
Will the bird in the cage take wing? In the evening of dawn,
The crane and turtle slipped. Who’s the face behind you?
