Chapter 3

Guards Visit 1

I was just thinking of going to look for the guard Joshua when I see him head my way.

Gian: Why, Joshua!  Why’re you here again?  You just walked by here on your rounds earlier, didn’t you?

Joshua:  Yeah … I guess…

Gian:  You’re looking for someone…  Lemme guess, Lloyd?

Bingo in one.  I realize this when a strained smile leaks out.

Joshua: He … you know how he is.  It’s almost next shift already, but he hasn’t returned to the office yet.

Gian: He’s probably giving a blowjob – naw, take that back – getting fucked somewhere right now.

Heaving a great sigh, Joshua looks troubled.

Joshua’s actually managed to stay a perfectly normal friend to the pervy, sly Lloyd, and seeing him worry like this is a pretty common sight.

Gian: It’d be a big problem if he’s not around during shift change.  If it comes out he’s missing, they’ll raise a huge commotion and do room inspections or lockdown or shit.  It’s just gonna cause us problems.

Joshua: He’s such a worrisome person.

With a resigned face, Joshua turns around and heads back, probably to continue looking for Lloyd.

Gian: Now that you mention it, there was some guy standing watch outside the linen room.  Maybe he’s having a happy shag in there?

Joshua’s a rare breed of guard, one who doesn’t care to pick on the inmates.  Lloyd’s the same, so telling him this much shouldn’t get me in trouble.

Joshua: Oh!  There…?  I haven’t looked yet.  You’re right, that might be the place.  Thanks, Gian.

Gian: I’ll collect on the thanks next time.

This is what we call, “give and take.”

Joshua: Hm?  True, but that’s only if Lloyd actually makes it on time for his shift on roll-call.

He says this without a trace of unhappiness before quickly striding off towards the linen room.
